About the business unit

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across a number of sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design, to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of role

Do you want to work for a company whose purpose is to improve society by considering social outcomes, and to transform businesses, communities, and opportunities for its employees?

We have a unique opportunity to act as an ‘infrastructure integrator’, using our energy sector expertise (networks, fuels, generation, energy storage etc.) coupled with other related domain expertise ranging across areas such as built environment engineering, transport planning, major programme management, or digital implementation.

However, translating ambition into business plans and programmes is a challenge for our clients for several reasons:

Energy is not core business for them. We need to be able to work with a senior client audience who are not experienced in the subject matter and help them develop clear, actionable, plans and roadmaps;

Clients don’t just want us to advise them about engineering plans and programmes. They are usually seeking to understand how best to engage with the energy market and supply chain;

Big clients have a core business to run with many other pressing issues. It is vital that energy and carbon strategy development addresses the needs, concerns and opportunities of multiple stakeholders internally and externally;

Building trust and credibility with clients is key, along with the ability to be a supportive ‘critical friend’ as they develop their plans

We need to grow our delivery capability to pull together multi-disciplinary teams of experts to help our clients progress the business changes they are looking to achieve. We have taken a decision to invest in a core team who can act as catalysts for this type of work and help to transition our existing skillset to deliver the necessary services. This role is envisaged to form part of a small cross cutting group with specific role focus on taking projects from a business development context into delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Bringing their own gravitas and thought leadership to enhance our profile with clients and stakeholders.
  • Being able to lead and successfully deliver novel projects which require combining different areas of subject expertise into a single co-ordinated offer
  • Working constructively with key commercial partners who bring complementary skill sets
  • Supporting the business in closing deals and acting as ‘Tiger Team’ resources to ensure that novel projects are set up to succeed.
  • Key Performance Indicators:
  • Experience of how to work with multiple stakeholders and understand their needs and drivers
  • Experience of managing complex service and/or consulting assignments
  • Demonstrable track record in energy projects related to the subject area including energy transition, security, and net zero targets
  • Experience and confidence working with senior managers in client organisations
  • Ability to work with a client to co-create a scope of work and secure their buy-in
  • Ability to work with colleagues internally and bring them along – work as a team player and build senior support internally where needed
  • Ability to achieve outcomes through influencing others
  • Personal resilience, ability to manage ambiguity, setbacks, and persist in the face of challenges

Candidate Specification

  • Degree qualified in an engineering discipline, in particular Electrical Engineering with chartership from relevant technical body
  • Strong strategic understanding of energy transformation agenda
  • Experience of pulling together complex public/private funded projects, working with government stakeholders and businesses at senior level
  • Ability to communicate outside the engineering profession with multiple stakeholders (e.g., ability to work at Board level with clients and their stakeholders)
  • Sharp analytical and report writing skills
  • Ability to be client led in developing novel business arrangements with Mott MacDonald (not just being able to respond to RfPs) – putting us on a footing with needs-based selling
  • Ability to work in an organisational setup where you need to lead through influence rather than being directive
  • Self-motivated and diligent, with an ability to work to tight deadlines, on simultaneous assignments
  • Ability to facilitate and mentor others in the business to help achieve their outcomes
  • Prepared to travel, sometimes at short notice, as required by projects and/or new business opportunities
