Overview of role

Working as a Developer Platform (Workspaces) Manager within our Central Digital Solutions team, you will help support and grow the adoption of our internal developer platform within Mott MacDonald to enable our product teams to develop products and product extensions that solve infrastructure industry challenges.


You will work closely with our solution architects, platform teams, and digital communities across the business to understand, document and assist with the identification and adoption of standard development and architectural patterns to ensure our product teams can confidently develop technically sound solutions that are aligned to business outcomes.


You will be people focused and technically minded, able to understand and represent the needs of our technologists in these rapidly growing digital domains, fostering a collaborative culture within our developer communities to ensure they are able to access the right support and guidance to be able to work within our wider standards and governance comfortably and safely.


Responsibilities


The role will help establish, guide, govern, and ensure the successful adoption of our architectural and development principles and standards using our internal development platforms.


The main duties and responsibilities of the role are

  • Managing and supporting our processes and governance around solution development using our developer platforms.
  • Managing the onboarding and assuring the abilities of our developer / technologist users and teams to ensure they can confidently and safely develop solutions within the correct guardrails.
  • Maintaining visibility of the solutions utilizing our platforms to ensure they are well managed, maintained, and continue to provide value to the business.
  • Ensuring our users have good experiences using our developer platforms to ensure retention – managing, and assisting with support around any issues raised, identifying common problems, capturing user feedback, and recommending improvements to our platform engineering teams.
  • Managing and contributing to our developer documentation, ensuring it meets the needs of our users, is accessible and kept up to date.
  • Community engagement, fostering a collaborative culture within our developer communities to encourage knowledge sharing and support from within.

You will have exposure to a wide range of sectors and service lines across Mott MacDonald; supporting colleagues with varying levels of digital maturity to select the right approaches to translate their knowledge, processes and methods into digital solutions that solve client challenges and deliver return on investment to the business.

The role will involve aspects of

  • Assisting our product teams in the selection of technologies to develop their solutions.
  • Helping our solution architects and technical leads to continue to develop our best practices around solution development.
  • Identifying and helping to monitor the use of and engagement with training materials or certification to help improve or validate digital literacy.
  • Helping our platform teams to identify improvements that help reduce the cognitive load on our developers, allowing them to focus more of their time on what they do best.
  • Supporting the building and maintenance of solution, data, and technology catalogues.
  • Monitoring and assuring technical development of products / extensions as they move through the product lifecycle.

About the team


The Central Digital Solutions team is responsible for creating and managing a portfolio of digital solutions to maximise return on investment on behalf of the EUNA and ISMA regions of Mott MacDonald.


The Solutions workstream is involved in guiding the business to make investment decisions regarding new products and extensions to existing products, working with product teams to grow products and deliver return on investment through software subscriptions, increased service revenue and efficiency savings, helping to incubate and test new ideas and providing advice to clients and project teams on which tools and products can best serve their needs.

Candidate Specification

Essential

  • University Degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working on or managing agile teams developing digital software or data solutions.
  • Strong presentation skills with a high degree of comfort speaking with executives, product managers, domain experts and software engineers.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Good knowledge of software development best practices.
  • Knowledge of cloud or cloud native solutions (Azure / AWS / Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of backend and frontend development languages such as SQL, C#, Python, JavaScript (TypeScript, ES6+).
  • Knowledge of information principles and processes.

Desirable

  • Experience contributing to and engaging with digital communities within an organization or publicly, including blogs, forums, social media, or open source.
  • Knowledge of technology solutions and ability to understand and convey emerging technologies, methodologies, and solutions in the Cloud / IT technology space.
  • Knowledge of the infrastructure / construction industry including one or more of our core sectors (water, energy, transport, buildings, and cities).
