Overview

Microsoft Azure’s Networking Security division is designing, building, and operating internal tooling and services that the business relies on every day. Ensuring that the network is secure and reliable through the development of automated and managed security services and tooling.


As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer in Azure Networking Security (UK) you will work as part of both UK and international teams, identifying and remediating issues on our global networks, building tooling and creating processes to proactively mitigate issues going forward. You will be leading the effort to improve availability, reliability, observability, performance, and security across the entire Microsoft Azure infrastructure.

You will mostly work remotely, with on-site meetings required one or two days per week, and you will be expected to participate in an on-call rota.

Responsibilities

  • Builds a complete understanding of how Azure networks work and uses that knowledge to quickly and accurately troubleshoot issues and propose working solutions which scale.
  • Develops and implements reliable automation tools and services that increase engineering efficiency, reduce operational burden, and reduce human errors in production, while making optimal use of infrastructure and resources by automating tasks; uses and identifies opportunities to improve existing automation to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and support sustainable network operations at scale across teams.
  • Creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
  • Influences telemetry analytics designs to better identify patterns that reveal errors and unexpected problems; leverages an understanding of network architectures and infrastructure at scale to develop, measure, track, and improve the quality of telemetry pipelines that support automated monitoring and incident response.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Deep understanding of networking engineering concepts and protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS)
  • Strong development skills using Python
  • Experience building network automation and tooling
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Time spent troubleshooting issues on cloud-scale or backbone networks
  • Highly proficient using Linux OS
  • Other programming/scripting languages
  • Experience with Network Security
  • Professional level vendor certifications e.g. CCNP/JNCIP, or higher
