Cloud & Server Senior Engineer
Location: London/Hybrid
Hours: 40 hours per week
Contract: Permanent - Salaried
The Cloud & Server Platform Senior Engineer provides technical leadership in the design, governance, and optimisation of the organisation’s cloud, hybrid, and on-premises platforms. Acting as a subject matter expert and escalation point within the team, the role promotes best practice standards, mentors junior engineers, and contributes to the strategic direction of infrastructure services in partnership with the team manager.
The Senior Engineer is responsible for maintaining the performance, security, and reliability of core platforms supporting applications, data, and integrations. They lead complex engineering initiatives, drive continuous improvement and innovation, and work closely with architecture, engineering, and security teams to deliver scalable, resilient, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
Cloud & Server Platform
- Lead the design, implementation, and optimisation of cloud based and hybrid infrastructure services.
- Act as a subject matter expert for Azure (and other cloud providers as applicable) and provide technical direction to the wider engineering team and operations team.
- Develop and enhance governance frameworks, including resource management, monitoring, automation standards, and lifecycle policies.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies to support innovation and business value.
- Oversee performance, health, and availability of the platform, ensuring proactive monitoring and incident prevention.
- Lead the development and maintenance of infrastructure as code solutions and automation pipelines.
- Drive platform resilience to implement and operate disaster recovery, backup, and operational excellence
- Mentor junior engineers and promote engineering excellence across the team.
Solution Engineering & Architecture Collaboration
- Work with product teams and solution architects to design and deliver cloud & server infrastructure solutions to align with requirements.
- Work autonomously to ensure that solutions are fit for purpose, whilst aligning with technology, security and data protection policies.
Collaboration & Integration
- Work closely with DevOps, data, and application development teams to ensure platforms support modern integration, analytics, and application workloads.
- Troubleshoot complex cross‑platform issues involving identity, networking, security, and application hosting.
- Liaise with third‑party vendors and managed service providers for escalations and issue resolution.
Security and Compliance
- Champion secure‑by‑design practices and enforce identity and access management policies.
- Ensure platform compliance with internal IT security policies and external standards such as ISO27001 or GDPR.
- Contribute to risk assessments, vulnerability remediation, and platform hardening initiatives, and lead on remediation.
Reporting and Communication
- Produce strategic reports on platform performance, cost optimisation, incidents, and service improvements.
- Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders about planned maintenance, service issues, and enhancements
- Maintain detailed documentation and contribute to knowledge‑sharing across teams.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands‑on experience with Azure or similar cloud platforms.
- 3+ years in infrastructure delivery and design or cloud engineering at an advanced level.
- Expert knowledge & understanding of Cloud architecture, deployment, configuration, monitoring, and management best practices.
- Strong expertise with multi‑cloud and hybrid cloud environments.
- Proven track record designing and delivering large‑scale cloud or hybrid solutions.
- Advanced knowledge of Active Directory in a hybrid environment
- Advanced knowledge of security, identity, hyper‑converged infrastructure, and DR/BCP with a good understanding of networking.
- Strong proficiency in PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform, or other automation tools.
- Strong knowledge of the use of Azure DevOps or Github, and IAC.
- Experience leading technical teams or acting as a senior escalation point.
Certifications (preferred):
- Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Azure Administrator Associate
- Optional certifications: ITIL.
