Cloud & Server Engineer

Location: London/Hybrid

Hours: 40 hours per week

Contract: Permanent - Salaried

The Cloud & Server Platform Engineer oversees the operation, optimisation, and governance of the organisation’s cloud, hybrid, and on-prem environments. Working closely with the Solution Architecture team and other technology functions, they design and deliver infrastructure solutions that meet both business and technical requirements.

This role is accountable for ensuring the performance, security, and scalability of core platform services that support data, applications, and integration workloads. The Engineer ensures platforms, including Azure and other relevant cloud providers, remain aligned with organisational objectives. Collaborating with IT, engineering, and security teams to maintain reliable and efficient operations.

Cloud & Server Platform Operations

  • The Cloud Platform Engineer exercises independent judgment and discretion in the design, implementation, and optimisation of cloud-based infrastructure and services. This role involves strategic decision-making that directly impacts system architecture, cost efficiency, and organisational scalability.
  • Work with the team manager and senior engineer to and implement a strategic roadmap for these platform services to align with organisational goals and IT objectives.
  • Collaborate with the team on the design, implementation, and maintenance of these platforms, ensuring high performance, availability, and scalability.
  • Follow and implement governance and management frameworks for cloud and server services, including policies for resource allocation, performance monitoring, capacity planning, patching and vulnerability remediation.
  • Evaluate new capabilities and features, recommending their adoption to improve platform functionality and business outcomes.
  • Monitor performance, health, and availability of cloud and on-premises server environments.
  • Assist with provisioning, configuration, and troubleshooting of infrastructure resources using automation tools where possible.
  • More than 50% of the employee’s time will be dedicated to duties involving systems analysis, cloud architecture design, scripting and automation, and the development or modification of infrastructure-as-code solutions.
  • Monitor backup and disaster recovery processes for the platform, ensuring robust data protection and continuity.
  • Work with the team to continuously improve cost and resource optimisation Solution Engineering
  • Work with product teams and solution architects to design and deliver cloud & server infrastructure solutions to align with requirements.
  • Work autonomously to ensure that solutions are fit for purpose, whilst aligning with technology, security and data protection policies.

Collaboration & Integration

  • Work closely with apps, data and DevOps teams to ensure that services and solutions meet the requirements of data integration, processing, and analytics workloads.
  • The position requires advanced technical knowledge and creative problem-solving to develop scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud solutions. The Engineer is expected to proactively identify opportunities for innovation and lead initiatives that enhance platform performance and reliability. Assist in maintaining connectivity between cloud and onpremises systems, including identity and authentication.
  • Liaise with third-party vendors and managed service providers for escalations and issue resolution.

Security and Compliance

  • Follow and enforce access control and identity management policies across platforms.
  • Support compliance with internal IT security policies and external standards such as ISO27001 or GDPR.
  • Contribute to regular risk reviews and help implement remediation plans for vulnerabilities or misconfigurations.

Reporting and Communication

  • Produce platform health and performance reports, highlighting incidents, trends, and improvement opportunities.
  • Communicate clearly with internal stakeholders about planned maintenance, service issues, and enhancements.
  • Provide documentation and contribute to knowledge bases for operational support and onboarding

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience working with Azure or similar hybrid cloud platforms, including infrastructure and application hosting.
  • 2 + years' experience in infrastructure delivery or design.
  • Deep understanding of Cloud architecture, deployment, configuration, monitoring, and management best practices.
  • Experience with public multi-cloud services, hybrid cloud integration, and hybrid cloud technologies.
  • Proven track record of leading technical teams and delivering complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts, storage configurations, virtualisation technologies, and disaster recovery/backup solutions for hybrid environments.
  • Proficiency with automation and scripting tools, such as PowerShell, Azure CLI, or Terraform.
  • Familiarity with identity and access management (IAM) tools and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance requirements, and IT governance frameworks, including ITIL, COBIT, or similar.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure Administrator Associate.
  • ITIL Foundation or Practitioner certification.
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or similar security certification.
