Job Description

Job Description:

Laboratory Research Scientist – Molecular Biology & Metagenomics

Waltham, Leicestershire | Full-Time

At the heart of our research centre in Waltham, we’re building something exciting — a world-class scientific capability that blends high-throughput sequencing with bespoke, non-routine experimentation. As a Laboratory Research Scientist, you’ll be hands-on with next-gen sequencing, shaping the way we understand the microbiome, metagenomics, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and run advanced molecular biology experiments, including next-generation sequencing (NGS) and metagenomics workflows.

  • Split your time between routine pipeline excellence and exploratory scientific discovery — no two weeks are the same.

  • Build, optimise, and validate new test methods, tools, and assays to keep us on the leading edge.

  • Own and manage lab spaces, ensuring they run smoothly and evolve with the science.

  • Generate and interpret robust, high-quality data that supports impactful decisions and discovery.

  • Use digital tools like LIMS and electronic lab notebooks to keep our research connected and current.

  • Mentor colleagues and champion scientific best practices within the lab community.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to share insights and drive continuous improvement.

What we’re looking for:

  • A BSc in Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, or related life sciences field.

  • A PhD in Molecular Biology, Molecular Microbiology or equivalent hands-on experience in industry.

  • Proven expertise in molecular techniques, especially NGS (Illumina NextSeq is a plus).

  • Hands-on metagenomics experience, ideally involving large-scale sample processing.

  • Confidence working in dynamic, complex research environments with changing priorities.

  • Sharp analytical skills, attention to detail, and the curiosity to solve scientific puzzles.

  • Experience with LIMS systems and digital lab documentation tools.

  • A growth mindset — you're here to learn, lead, and leave a mark.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a trailblazing team solving complex biological challenges with real-world impact.

  • Get the best of both worlds: the rigour of operational excellence with the thrill of scientific discovery.

  • Help shape the future of molecular microbiology and metagenomics in an organisation that values innovation, learning, and collaboration.

  • Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and a truly supportive team culture.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If you're passionate about molecular biology, driven by discovery, and ready to stretch yourself in a high-impact role — we’d love to hear from you.

Apply today and shape the future of molecular biology research.
