Senior Change and Release Engineer
Job Description
Title: Senior Change and Release Engineer
Job Level: 4
Location: Pune
Summary: We are looking for an experienced Senior Change and Release Engineer to improve the safety, speed, and visibility of technology changes across Maersk. This role combines change engineering, operational governance, data analysis, and automation to reduce change-related incidents while enabling teams to deploy confidently and frequently. The successful candidate will work across CI/CD and traditional change environments, establish scalable risk controls, improve change and deployment visibility, and build automation and AI-assisted workflows that modernise change and release operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Change Engineering and Automation:
- Champion the shift from manual, human-dependent deployments to automated, staged deployments
- Establish scalable, risk-based governance and engineering controls that improve deployment safety without creating unnecessary delivery friction
- Enable full visibility of every production change – including vendor-led and CI/CD deployments to support incident correlation, faster root-cause identification and audit readiness
- Own AI-enabled operational initiatives for change and release – pioneer, build and experiment with AI-driven workflows, and continuously explore how to advance the agentic way of doing change and release engineering
Governance and Operational Performance:
- Own the change and release KPIs end to end, driving sustained reduction of change-caused P1/P2 major incidents; analyse change failures and root-cause patterns and convert them into targeted preventive actions
- Surface compliance, trends and exceptions to leadership, keeping enforcement fair, transparent and non-punitive
- Enforce mandatory UAT/test evidence and validated, tested rollback plans for all major and critical changes before approval, with complete blast-radius and impact capture so the right level of scrutiny is applied to each change
- Run effective, right-sized Change Advisory Board (CAB) meetings that balance governance with speed of delivery
Leadership and Continuous Improvement:
- Lead and coach a small team of Change Managers, building a culture of ownership, accountability and delivery discipline
- Provide end-to-end, process-level ownership – maintaining process documentation, SOPs and quick-reference guidance, and periodically reviewing, upgrading and evolving the process wherever needed to keep it fit for purpose
- Produce crisp, outcome-driven reporting for senior leadership on change KPIs, adoption progress and governance health
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field with relevant industry certifications
- 10+ years of IT experience with proven expertise in IT change and release operations in a high-volume, high-impact production environment
- Hands-on experience governing changes across CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), traditional releases and vendor-led changes
- Prior experience participating in or facilitating CAB forums, with exposure to channel-based and post-incident change restriction models
- Familiarity with DORA metrics (lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate) and their application in assessing software delivery performance
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex change and incident data sets and derive actionable insights
- Practical exposure to enterprise ITSM platforms, modern automation approaches and AI-assisted change tooling
- Evidence of an automation mindset, using engineering-led approaches to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills up to Tech Leadership level.
- Exposure to programming/scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation and data manipulation is desirable
- Prior experience in cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerisation technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes) is highly desirable
