Job Description

Ensures general legal compliance with legal and statutory requirements in in all the countries in Central America, mainly in Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, drawing on the expertise of specialized legal counsel if needed. Responsible for providing leadership and guidance to other functions by using a broad range of legal skills to advance the organization's commercial agenda in a timely manner. Act as a dependable legal business partner to internal stakeholders, facilitate business growth with a customer-centric mindset and protect the company's values, interests and reputation at the same time.

Responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships and work effectively with different internal functions and brands to understand business dynamics and needs.

  • Ensure adherence to global legal and compliance guidelines.

  • Provide pragmatic legal advice across different areas of law to minimize legal risks while enabling business objectives.

  • Identify and assess legal risks, agree on corrective actions with relevant areas and managers, and provide recommendations for risk mitigation.

  • Support contract negotiations and participate in transactional and corporate governance initiatives.

  • Create and deliver (directly or indirectly) legal training materials for relevant functions.

  • Manage and respond to requirements from authorities and review documentation with potential legal impact on the company.

  • Support growth projects and product implementations.

  • Coordinate with external lawyers in the defense of the company in court cases and administrative procedures, including gathering required information and documentation.

  • Engage and manage external legal counsel, including oversight of the legal budget.

  • Collaborate closely with the Legal team to develop and improve standardized templates, processes, and procedures.

  • Review provisions related to legal expenses and contingencies.

  • Represent the Legal function before local authorities, suppliers, and customers.

  • Identify required licenses and permits, and provide legal guidance on regulatory requirements and procedures.

  • Ensure corporate governance compliance, including board and shareholders’ meetings and powers of attorney (POAs).

  • Maintain the legal requirements matrix updated per country.

  • Monitor and analyze new and evolving regulations.

  • Support processes related to the return of long-standing containers before authorities.

  • Support the Head of Legal on matters related to Third Party Agents (TPAs).

  • Perform other duties as required by the direct manager.

  • The role provides geographic coverage for products in Central America, primarily Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

  • This position is based in Guatemala and is an individual contributor role (no direct reports).​

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law or an equivalent or higher legal qualification

  • At least 3 years of experience within the legal field as a qualified lawyer, preferably in corporate environments, with desirable exposure to the logistics or supply chain industry and multinational companies, or experience within a Big 4 firm or Tier 1 law firm.

  • Availability to travel

Operational Efficiency & Customer Service Experience

  • Understanding of legal / commercial framework and documentation related to.

  • Ability to work effectively cross all ocean and logistics & services processes

  • Management of legal dunning procedures

  • Leadership

  • Customer-facing and interaction skills with high-level of customer orientation

  • Ability to work and thrive in a flexible matrix organization with focus on networking, with proven ability to gain respect and confidence from internal and external stakeholders to advocate for our business priorities and thereby drive improvements.

  • Self-starter, hands-on, empathy, personal tact, strong communication and influencing skills
