Journals Commissioning Lead

Job Description

Reporting into the Content Acquisition Director, the Journals Team Lead role will involve the line management of a small team of journal publishers and the strategic development of a portfolio of journals. You will work closely with key departments around the business, including Sales, Product and Research Integrity. The role will focus on expanding networks to support increased commissioning of content, acting as an advocate for Emerald to ensure we are a leading voice in our communities.

Please note - this job requires office attendance in our Leeds office once a month for team days, and for company-wide events quarterly.

Day to day we’ll trust you to:   

  • Ensure delivery against the strategic development goals for the journals programme, including the expansion of our open access offer
  • Line management and development of a small team of journals publishers, supporting them to grow their own portfolio
  • Leading on cross-departmental projects to deliver innovation and growth

You’ll need to have:   

  • Has experience of managing and developing a team, who can identify opportunities to coach and support team members to ensure Emerald’s expectations are met.
  • Can display proactive and innovative approaches to way of working which maximises time and resource aligned to our growth strategies and portfolio segmentation
  • Has proven journals publishing experience, working to strategic priorities and portfolio targets.
  • Is passionate about research aligned to delivering real societal impact.
  • Has the drive to expand their existing network and act as an advocate for Emerald
  • Has the ability to create and own a strategic development plan, building a strong pipeline of journal articles and other relevant digital content.
  • Embraces innovation and new ways of working.
  • Has excellent, proven relationship management/building skills, and an ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Has excellent working knowledge of the rapidly evolving academic publishing environment – for example in respect of open research.
