Role
The Head of Non-Functional Test and Chaos Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for defining, implementing, and overseeing strategies that ensure the robustness, scalability, and resilience of technology systems. This role requires a visionary leader who can drive the adoption of cutting-edge testing and chaos engineering practices, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement the non-functional testing strategy, encompassing performance, scalability, security, reliability, and compliance.
Lead the chaos engineering programme, designing and executing experiments to proactively identify system weaknesses and failure points.
Establish and maintain best practices, standards, and frameworks for non-functional testing and chaos engineering across the organisation.
Collaborate with engineering, architecture, security, and product teams to integrate non-functional requirements into the software development lifecycle.
Oversee the selection, deployment, and optimisation of tools and platforms for performance testing, load testing, and chaos engineering.
Ensure regulatory and industry compliance for non-functional aspects of systems, including operational resilience.
Mentor and lead a team of specialists, fostering professional growth and encouraging knowledge sharing.
Report on key metrics, findings, and improvements to senior stakeholders, providing recommendations for strategic investments and risk mitigation.
Champion a culture of experimentation, learning, and resilience throughout the technology organisation.
Essential Skills and Experience
Proven experience in non-functional testing domains, such as performance, reliability, scalability, and security.
Demonstrated expertise in chaos engineering principles and tools (e.g., Gremlin, Chaos Monkey, LitmusChaos).
Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop high-performing teams.
Deep understanding of modern software architectures, including microservices, cloud-native platforms, and distributed systems.
Experience with continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and DevOps practices.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Track record of driving organisational change and delivering measurable improvements in system reliability and performance.
Familiarity with regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to technology resilience and data protection.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Relevant certifications in testing, cloud, security, or DevOps (e.g., ISTQB, AWS/Azure/GCP, Certified Chaos Engineering Professional) are desirable.
Minimum 10 years of experience in software testing, engineering, or related disciplines, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

Our hiring process and what you can expect:
Application: a member of our talent acquisition team will review your application against the key requirements for the role and let you know within two weeks whether you’re moving forward to the next stage;
Screening: You’ll spend 30-45 minutes speaking to one of our recruiters learning more about the role and ClearBank, and we’ll get it know more about you, your experience and how your skills align with the role (this will be via phone or Teams video call). You can expect to hear back from us within seven days following this meeting (if things are taking longer than expected, we’ll let you know that too);
First Interview: You’ll spend one hour with a member of our hiring team focusing on your skills, competencies and your ways of working at the same time we’ll give you time to ask more questions about the role, the team and learn more about the ClearBank culture. This will be via Teams.
Second Interview: This will be a competency-based interview with one or more members of our team.
Final Stage: You will have a final meeting with the Head of Department. This will be around 45-60 minutes.
