Simulation Software Engineer
Job Description
About You
You will be a driven, motivated software engineer, passionate about creating high quality, reliable, high-performance software programs. Coming from a background of high-performance computing through development of control systems, video game development, or modelling and simulation algorithms, you will have developed a passion and an interest in optimising software performance and tailoring systems to the hardware they are running on.
You are a great communicator with an interest in sharing your knowledge with others, and expanding your own horizons with the backing of our senior leadership team. You will want to make an immediate impact on our talented team, and build the foundations of software systems which will be robust and performant for years to come.
You will be looking to take a step up to, or already working at, senior level. You want to work independently to take ownership of project scope, timelines, resources, and deliverables, and proactively communicate with leadership.
For the senior level, progression in this role moves to Principal/Tech Lead roles, with opportunities for mentoring and – optionally in future – for line management of junior engineers.
Responsibilities
This is a high-impact role where you will have support from the senior leadership to take ownership of cutting-edge projects and novel, unique developments in simulation technology. As a Simulation Software Engineer at Canopy, you will:
Architect, implement, and lead projects in our state-of-the-art lap time simulation platform, improving performance, reliability, modularity, and testability
Contribute to discussions, refinement, and review of customer requests and internal developments, bringing knowledge and experience of professional software development to our team of talented engineers
Maintain and update our build systems and tooling to test and implement updates to our HPC infrastructure, including developing testing and benchmarking as part of CI/CD.
Mentor and train junior employees in high level software engineering principles and low level optimisation and solver routines, building continuity and leaving a legacy on our team
Develop and formalise our relationship with agentic coding tools, including the opportunity to build loops and processes using self-hosted and third-party LLMs.
Skills and Experience
This is a role in which your knowledge and experience will be valuable from day one, but you will also have opportunities to learn about adjacent industries and to further your own knowledge by taking on self-proposed projects to enhance our simulation performance and reliability.
For the mid-level role (£55-65K), applicants must have:
Minimum two years’ experience in C++ (experience with other languages e.g. C, Rust, Zig will be considered but C++ is a significant advantage)
Degree in CS, Engineering, Maths, or some related topic with formal training in software engineering
Knowledge of and interest in learning about the latest trends in distributed systems, HPC clusters, and hardware-specific optimisations
Experience of professional software development, including source control, code review, and pipelines/deployments.
For the senior level of this role (£65-70K), we would expect to see:
Demonstrated leadership and delivery of software projects
Ownership of tools, systems, or processes within an organisation or team
Experience of end-to-end software delivery, including build systems and CI/CD
Experience in a variety of different hardware environments and some understanding of kernel and CPU level performance
Beneficial skills and experience include:
Interest in motorsport and/or professional experience in motorsport, data science, vehicle engineering, or another related industry
Experience of cross-compilation and multi-platform deployments, including containerisation
Experience of real-time or interactive systems, including video game design, graphics engines, or human-interface control systems.
Interest in following trends in software development and technology, and a desire to bring new ideas and concepts to our team.
Prerequisites
You must be a tax resident in the UK to apply for this role. At this stage we are regrettably unable to offer visa sponsorship.
Professional experience in a software development role is essential: this is not a graduate position.
