Job Description

Recruiter: Lloyd Hughes
Hiring Manager: Gavin Winter
Career Grade: E
Internal Closing Date: 29th October 2026

Due to the sensitive nature of this role, you will be required to undergo DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum may be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.

Security isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when you think of BT, but when it comes to keeping everyone safely connected, We Are The Protectors. We deal with thousands of cyber-attacks every day, so that millions of people can safely go about their daily lives and run their businesses. We deliver vital work at scale, with real breadth and impact. We connect for good.
You'll be joining a specialist security team that is a trusted partner to governments worldwide, protecting critical national infrastructure and committed to the safety and security of our nation and global communities. Our mission focused work is innovative, inspiring and technologically challenging in a way that makes every day different and stimulating. We provide the opportunity to work on rare projects, with exciting tools and brilliant people. Everyone has access to unparalleled professional and personal development opportunities and your contribution is always valued.

About the role

We are engineers who build, automate, and sustain the environments and enabling services that deliver mission-critical outcomes.

Today, we work primarily (not exclusively) with on-premises technology stacks, however our focus is not the racked hardware or deployment cycles of vSphere or SAN storage, we are engineers consuming these technologies at the API and automation layers. We have projects using automation to deploy virtual machines and enact detailed and complex guest OS configurations across enterprise Windows and Linux environments.

Our job isn't to follow vendor blueprints or push a single technology stack; we aim to solve complex technical problems cleanly and reliably. We have broad autonomy to pick the right tool for the job, whether that is deploying cutting-edge open-source projects, engineering enterprise Windows and Linux systems, or writing custom integrations to tie disparate platforms together.

Whether your background is rooted in core Windows administration, Linux, or network engineering, what matters is your ability to break down problems, automate repetitive work, and build systems that last.

This role requires eligibility for UK Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. As a result, applicants must typically be sole British citizens and have lived in the UK continuously for the previous 10 years, subject to UK Government vetting requirements.

What you’ll be doing

  • Hands-on OS & Server automation. Writing and improving automation (primarily Ansible) to handle OS configuration. Everything from getting Debian networking configuration just right to configuring Active Directory.
  • Solution design to solve customer challenges. Practical translation of customer needs into deployable architectures.
  • Integrating and deploying applications and services from third parties.
  • Knowledge sharing & presentations to peers and customers.

Team effort split is approximately:

  • 25% Automation, Scripting, Software Engineering
  • 25% Linux/Windows Systems Engineering
  • 20% Solution Investigations, Design & Communications
  • 20% Application Deployment and Integration
  • 10% Networking and Troubleshooting

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Core Operating Systems: Solid hands-on experience in guest-level administration and configuration for either Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu, Debian) or Windows (Active Directory, PowerShell, Core Services).Prototyping:
  • Curiosity and confidence when exploring unfamiliar tools. Comfortable picking up new open-source or enterprise technologies, experimenting in a test environment, and building Proofs of Concept to see what works.
  • Network Fundamentals: Strong grasp of internet essentials, including TCP/IP, DNS, routing, and Certificate/PKI concepts.

Desirable Skills / Experience

We are a multi-disciplinary team of specialists and generalists. While no one is expected to know everything, candidates should bring deep expertise or broader cross-platform experience that overlaps with the following:

  • Automation & Orchestration: Ansible is a primary technology for us, specifically using it to automate detailed guest OS configuration and applications deployments across a wide range of target systems.
  • Virtualisation & container platforms (vSphere, Docker/Podman, K3s, K8s). Strong working knowledge of vSphere from a workload perspective (cloning, templates, networking)
  • Terraform. Future adoption for VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) automation.
  • Enterprise Windows technologies: Active Directory, Remote Desktop Services, ADFS (SAML, OAuth), SQL Server, Exchange and PowerShell.
  • Linux administration: Red Hat, Ubuntu and Debian; Apache, NGINX, HAProxy.
  • Networking & Internet: DNS, Certificates/PKI, Proxy services, Dynamic Routing, DHCP, Firewalls, vSphere NSX
  • Software development: Python (Django, Ninja, Selenium) and React/NextJS.
  • Monitoring, Audit & Security: (Zabbix, Grafana, Security Onion, ELK)
  • AI platforms: Deploying and operating open-source LLMs in on-premises environments.
  • Public Cloud: AWS services including Lambda driven automation, Infrastructure as Code and workflow orchestration supporting internet focused test and development. Cloud Monitoring (CloudWatch).
