Job Description

About the role

At BT, our strategy is how we respond to our customers, outpace competitors, and adapt to a fast-changing world. Strategy & Change is where that happens. We set BT’s direction and work with every part of the business to make it real. Our teams cover the full journey – from shaping the big picture, to making change happen on the ground, to creating what comes next.

Within Strategy & Change, the Group Strategy & Insight team works across the whole business to create a set of integrated strategies and plans, based on deep insight from customers, markets and competitors to drive long-term value creation. As part of the Group Strategy & Insight team, the Commercial Strategy team has a critical role to play on investments in cutting-edge 5G and FTTP technologies. Our team articulates the impact of strategic decisions and commercial opportunities on different customer facing units (CFUs) and manages trade-offs to ensure our investments deliver BT’s strategic priorities. We have wide ranging exposure across BT and our work feeds directly into strategic and investment decisions within BT and informs decision making at the highest level.

This role sits at the intersection of strategy, commercial decision‑making and people‑centred delivery. The work is complex and often ambiguous, requiring strong analytical thinking alongside sound judgement and the ability to work effectively with others. You will collaborate with colleagues across BT who bring different perspectives, priorities and constraints. Success in this role is about helping to develop well‑reasoned recommendations which balance trade-offs, communicating them clearly, and contributing to actionable outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

As a Strategy Manager, you will support the development of strategic and commercial recommendations by contributing structured analysis, insight and judgement to complex business questions. You will work as part of multi‑disciplinary teams, helping turn data and insight into clear thinking that informs senior decision‑making.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Supporting the structuring and analysis of strategic or commercial problems, applying data, insight and judgement to help clarify options and trade‑offs
  • Owning and delivering workstreams to translate analysis into clear, concise materials that contribute to compelling narratives and support decision‑ready recommendations
  • Working collaboratively across teams and functions to build understanding of different perspectives and contribute to aligned outcomes
  • Developing expertise in commercial modelling, customer insight and market dynamics, and applying these consistently
  • Contributing positively to team culture by working openly, constructively and with ownership of quality and pace of delivering of outputs

This is a role for someone who combines strong analytical foundations with curiosity about how organisations and people work, and who is motivated by learning, collaboration and impact.

Essential Skills / Experience

Relevant industry experience i.e. TMT is beneficial but not required. An interest in the sector and grasp of the key trends is important.

  • Experience breaking down strategic or commercial problems into structured analyses, using data and logical frameworks to clarify options and trade‑offs.
  • Experience building or contributing to commercial models or business cases (e.g. NPV, IRR, scenario analysis), with clear articulation of assumptions, sensitivities and limitations.
  • Ability to distil complex analysis and insight into clear, concise outputs that support decision‑making for senior audiences.
  • Experience working with stakeholders across different teams or functions, building trust through reliability, clarity and constructive engagement
  • Evidence of sound judgement in balancing evidence, uncertainty and practical constraints

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience in an in‑house strategy, commercial or consulting environment
  • Comfort working on ambiguous or evolving problems
  • Curiosity about how decisions are made in organisations and how to influence outcomes
  • Ability to adjust working style and communication approach, with support, in response to different people, contexts and expectations.
