About the role
The Software Engineering Manager leads end-to-end technical delivery of secure, scalable, resilient and maintainable digital applications. The role turns product and business priorities into executable engineering plans and guides teams through design, development, testing, release and production support. It supports BT's focus on simplifying how we operate and using technology and AI to work smarter by embedding responsible AI-assisted engineering, strong technical governance and operational readiness. The role works closely with product, architecture, engineering, DevOps, operations and partner teams to manage dependencies, resolve blockers and deliver measurable outcomes.
What you’ll be doing
• Own technical delivery across the software lifecycle, from requirements and solution design through build, test, release and production stabilisation.
• Translate product roadmaps and business priorities into clear engineering outcomes, plans, milestones and technical work packages.
• Lead estimation, capacity and delivery planning, ensuring scope, sequencing and acceptance criteria are understood.
• Track progress, risks, dependencies, defects and delivery readiness; remove blockers and maintain momentum.
• Coordinate internal teams, partner teams and shared platforms, with clear ownership of interfaces and dependencies.
• Provide concise, evidence-based reporting on delivery health, technical risks, trade-offs and decisions.
• Set engineering standards and provide direction for API-first, microservices-based and cloud-native solutions.
• Lead design reviews, code quality reviews, technical assurance and release-readiness assessments.
• Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, OpenAPI specifications, secure coding standards and engineering guardrails.
• Lead responsible use of AI across requirements, design, coding, refactoring, testing, documentation and troubleshooting. Embed spec-driven development and AI-assisted quality practices with human oversight and clear engineering accountability.
• Guide rapid proofs of concept and appropriate use of RAG, MCP, AI agents and developer automation.
• Guide delivery of backend APIs, frontend applications and enterprise integrations using modern engineering technologies.
• Promote SOLID principles, maintainability, effective exception handling, logging and appropriate modularity.
• Own the quality strategy across unit, API, integration, functional and non-functional testing.
• Ensure security, privacy, performance, scalability, accessibility, reliability and recoverability throughout delivery.
• Define production-readiness criteria covering support documentation, monitoring, alerting, rollback and recovery.
• Drive automated cloud deployment, CI/CD, environment management, release automation and deployment governance.

Essential Skills / Experience
• Proven experience leading complex software products or platforms across multiple lifecycle stages.
• Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into executable technical plans and coordinate delivery across teams and dependencies.
• Strong delivery discipline across estimation, prioritisation, risk management, quality governance, release readiness and operational transition.
• Experience making and communicating technical trade-offs while staying aligned with product and business priorities.
• Experience coaching engineers while maintaining hands-on technical credibility.
• Strong software engineering background in Java/Spring Boot, Node.js, Python or a comparable technology.
• Good understanding of a modern frontend framework such as React or Angular.
• Strong knowledge of REST APIs, OpenAPI, API-first development, microservices and distributed systems.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, Oracle or another relational database.
Desirable Skills / Experience
• Good understanding of AWS or another major cloud platform and cloud-native delivery.
• Experience with Git, CI/CD, DevOps, automated testing and modern engineering toolchains.
• Good understanding of security, performance, scalability, observability, resilience and maintainability.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted software development tools and their responsible use.
• Practical understanding of AI for code generation, review, testing, documentation, debugging and technical design.
• Awareness of RAG, MCP, AI agents, prompt or spec-driven development and developer automation.
• Experience working in Agile or comparable iterative delivery environments.
• Strong planning, problem-solving, decision-making and stakeholder communication skills.
