Location
This role can be based out of our Adastral Park, Ipswich office, or our Bristol office.
Due to the nature of the work, you will be required to come onsite 5 days per week and be elegible for security clearance.

Secure Contracts is an organization within BT designed to serve the UK Governement. We are here to underpin public safety and national security. You will be working on modernising services to government and delivering new contract capabilities as well as maintaining the security posture of existing contracts and services. This role consumes existing solftware developers from across the organisation and the role holder will position a new dedicated software development team in Secure Contracts that they will expand over the next 24 months based on contract demand.
What you’ll be doing
The Software Engineering Manager coordinates the execution of the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT’s commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.
Accountabilities
- Manages and coaches teams of software engineers driving the engineering organisation’s ability to deliver high quality code on time and on budget and implementing means of bringing measurability as well as predictability to the engineering organisation’s capabilities
- Oversees the execution of technical decisions, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high-performance products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short term impact with long-term transformation
- Monitors, manages and ensures timely releases from teams by driving compliance with key release quality metrics
- Consults on complex and strategic issues using advanced technical knowledge, across wider industry and/or specific sectors, and develops bespoke or leading edge, technically complex solutions (e.g., relating to new, untested technology and/or large-scale impact of products)
- Drives the implementation of the defined technical roadmap to meet the needs of the business, engineering team, and partner teams
- Implements, engineering and operational excellence initiatives, implementing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement
- Takes a managerial and influencer role in the software engineering function, implementing the technical vision and the pursuit of innovations regarding new technologies, platforms and applications
- Develops “best-in-class” engineering for services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularised, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored and reusable
- The Software Engineering Manager coordinates the execution of the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT’s commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.
- Oversees the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems, proactively removing blockers from the team's work
- Researches, designs and writes new software and performs deep dive data analysis, to identify issues and implement ways to improve working processes within the area of software engineering responsibility, such as avoiding and reducing technical debt
- Performs complex debugging and troubleshooting of critical issues throughout the development process
- Supports the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems
- Coordinates the evaluation and implementation of high-quality tools and automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity
- Builds and maintains an engineering culture that fosters innovation and creativity while delivering high quality products with predictability and reliability
- Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in software engineering
Skills and Experience
Required
- Experienced in leading a team to ISO9001 standards.
- Extensive experience in full stack development. (Ideally: React, JavaScript/TypeScript, Tailwind/Bootstrap, C#, Java, ASP.net, SQL)
- Proficiant in the full software development lifecycle, secure by design and delivering through CI/CD pipelines.
- The role holder must hold or be eligible to achieve SC with no caveats prior to commencement of the role.
Desired
- Proficient using REST APIs and modern tech stack for system integration, and the ability to code-review team members repos and provide justification on refactoring.
- Deep understanding of database structures.
- Working with a UX team or being autonomous in making sound UX decisions.
- A good understanding of monolithic vs microservice architecture, and when to use each one.
- Mentoring junior developers, with acknowledgment of people’s current experience.
- A good understanding of the SDLC and Agile working. The ability to run scrum ceremonies in the absence of the scrum master.
