About the role

Sales and Commercial?

In Sales and Commercial, we’re building one of the biggest and best sales teams in the country. We’ve got big ambitions to develop a team that has the right ability and will to win. Central to our ambitions are;

  • Using our unparalleled expertise to bring first class solutions to market and offer a compelling value proposition to our customers that’s unmatched by our competitors
  • Developing a highly skilled, highly efficient sales powerhouse through competitive pricing, an optimised channel model and best in class tools
  • Relentless pursuit of a high-performance culture founded on clear career progression and the drive and determination to become the UK’s best sales force

Lead BT's construction and utilities sales team and help shape our position in these industries. This role goes beyond managing accounts and performance: you'll turn customer insight and market trends into a growth strategy and represent BT at the events and forums that matter to our customers.

You'll own the acquisition and growth sales strategy, delivering profitable, sustainable revenue in the current financial year and over the longer term as part of the Construction & Utilities business plan. With a particular focus on Construction organisations, UK Water, Energy and Gas clients, you'll position BT as a strategic technology partner that helps customers modernise operations, improve resilience and security and increase efficiency.

You'll lead a team of seven, managing relationships with major UK construction and utilities organisations. Working with specialists across mobile connectivity, security and networks, and with business development colleagues, you'll grow existing relationships and pursue opportunities with customers where BT has more to offer.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own the acquisition and growth strategy across construction and utilities, prioritising accounts, market coverage and resources using insight into customer investment, funding cycles and market conditions.
  • Build qualified pipeline and close complex technology or telecommunications opportunities with business development colleagues, specialists and partners, growing existing accounts and winning new customers.
  • Lead and coach the team, allocate targets and manage costs, delivering revenue, EBITDA, sales order value and customer experience goals while building sector expertise and sales capability.
  • Represent BT with customers, partners and industry bodies through events, speaking opportunities and relevant content, using market insight to shape propositions with product and innovation colleagues.
  • Set customer engagement plans with Director-level commitment and coordinate internal teams to improve customer experience and NPS, including through migrations from end-of-life technology that protect service and revenue.
  • Ensure sound sales governance, including accurate Salesforce and pipeline data, compliance with legal and competition requirements, and adherence to sales incentive, mandatory training, expenses, gifts and hospitality policies.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Senior people leadership capability, with experience motivating, coaching and developing a high-performing acquisition and growth sales team.
  • Proven sales credibility with Construction organisations, UK Utilities clients, ideally across Water, Energy and/or Gas.
  • Deep understanding of Utilities customer priorities, buying environments, regulatory pressures, investment drivers and market dynamics.
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at Director and C-suite level.
  • Ability to translate Utilities business, operational and technology challenges into commercially compelling propositions and qualified sales opportunities.
  • Ability to use market, customer and sales-performance insight to adjust priorities and improve results.
  • Confidence leading challenging customer situations and high-profile opportunities through escalation and senior engagement.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Consultative selling skills and the ability to position BT in a commercially attractive and differentiated way.
  • Strong understanding of how connectivity, Sovereign cloud, cyber security, mobile, IoT, AI and operational technology can support Construction and Utilities clients
  • Ability to communicate complex technical subject matter clearly to non-technical customer stakeholders
