About the role

As a RAN Performance Specialist, you'll have a direct impact on:

  • EE/BT Current & future Network Performance, Network Efficiency & Subscriber’s Experience (including Emergency Services Network).
  • Positive/Negative Perception/PR of Network performance/customer experience.
  • Designing new LTE network providing coverage above 500ft for Air based vehicles.

It achieves this by working with internal/external stakeholders and suppliers of Equipment/Services to deliver the “fit for purpose” RAN feature and parameter designs, subsequent tuning activities, Design & Performance validation activities and producing guidance on operational best practise for maintaining End User experience.

This role has a significant impact on shaping the Mobile RAN Strategy & subsequent budget required to deliver this.

You will be required to undergo National Security Vetting to SC or NPPV level.

What you’ll be doing

  • Continuous network performance monitoring & reporting, feature trials/optimisation to uplift network performance.
  • Expertise in UE log analysis, Wire shark tracing and E2E logs including Nokia system traces.
  • Identifying the root cause and define measures to improve underperforming KPIs
  • Analysing Flight Test logs and Network protocol traces for underperformance & defects in Volte, ESN PTT and data services.
  • Investigate detected and reported Systematic issues within this element of the ESN Service.
  • Performance root cause analysis using multiple sources of data primarily from:
    • OSS counters and KPIs
    • UE Application events/L1/L2/L3 information
    • Drive Test UE logs/Wireshark covering OSI L1-L7.

    • E-Node B and CN protocol analysis.
    • 3rd Party OTT (Over the Top) protocol traces.

    • Change logs.
  • Review and understand the Low-Level Designs for RAN features, parameters and RAN/E2E KPIs.
  • Coordinate the activities of internal BT parties, external third parties such as RAN Suppliers, outsourced partners, government departments to drive for uplift in product performance and manage the successful development and delivery of designed solutions.
  • Liase with the Design Authorities and Strategy team to agree key aspects of High-Level Design.
  • Collaborate with peer teams including those within RAN and Core Network, Transmission, Test & Devices to ensure designs are optimal from an E2E perspective.
  • Provide tooling & analytics requirements into tools development teams to enable role to be undertaken effectively as the network evolves.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Expert knowledge & hands on experience of UE logs analysis & tracing.
  • Expert hands-on experience on Network Performance management and reporting
  • In depth knowledge of Mobile networks particularly 4G FDD/TDD with particularly deep understanding design and operation.
  • Expert Nokia RAN hardware, software, features and functions and parameters
  • In depth knowledge of LTE & SIP signalling, PTT (push to talk), SRTP troubleshooting & Optimisation
  • In depth knowledge of LTE/Public Safety signalling, troubleshooting & Optimisation, able to analyse drive test logs, Wireshark traces and protocol traces from network elements.
  • Excellent understanding of 3GPP & ETSI specifications.
