About the role

Our team defines our customer-facing mobile data services, how those services should work, and how the should be configured. To achieve this, the team designs for platforms with names known to the industry as SGW, PGW, SMF, UPF, DNS, Gi LAN and CGNAT Firewall (explained below), plus others.

It aligns with strategy to ensure that we build, upgrade and bring in new solutions to stay ahead of the competition. This is a really exciting time as we have recently moved onto a new cloud native core with container orchestration and advanced 5G features.

You’ll be part of that picture, deciding exactly how some customer-facing services will operate for EE, BT, and multiple other brands. This means being the design lead for one or more of these services, or one of the platforms it runs over. What you do directly influences happy or unhappy customers.

This team has built the best performing network in the UK since 2013, and was first to launch both 4G and 5G.

What you’ll be doing

-Author design documents (such as High Level or Low Level Designs, configuration, or sequence flows).
-Be a backup for at least one other service or platform, to ensure that there are no single points of failure
amongst our design cover.
-Liaise with vendors and suppliers.
-Analyse logs and packet traces to identify the cause of issues.
-Measure the capacity and traffic profiles of services and platforms to ensure that our network can serve our
customers well.
-Provide ad-hoc consultancy to other teams and business units based on your specialist knowledge of our
services – this could be to any stakeholder within the business.
-Attend and feedback on a series of standard meetings & forums including Project Meetings, Design Review
Meetings, and Post Implementation Reviews.
-You could be working on a number of platforms such as SGW (Serving Gateway), PGW (Packet Data
Network Gateway), DNS (Domain Name System), Gi Lan (Internet traffic optimisation platforms), or CGNAT
(Carrier Grade Network Address Translation).

Essential Skills / Experience

-You’ll have the desire and ability to understand how a technical system works underneath, and put this to use in designing new services and platforms to perform optimally.
-You can express your thoughts clearly and concisely in writing, and are thoughtful towards the types of audiences that will be reading your documentation. Often, to convey a complex technical interaction accurately, drawing diagrams will be necessary. Use Cases, Sequence -------Flows, Flow Charts & Timelines are some examples of what might be needed.
-Hands-on experience with Juniper and Cisco routing platforms in large-scale environments
-You’re able to verbally communicate complex issues clearly and concisely, including to non-technical people.
-Proven experience integrating RADIUS for user authentication and usage accounting
-You will be expected to keep up-to-date with big industry changes at a high level. Over the next couple of years this will cover 3GPP releases 16 & 17, cloud computing (Openstack/Docker/Kubernetes/Microservices), web and internet technologies. You don’t need to know any of these in full depth, unless it’s important for what you do.

Mandatory
-Several years of experience designing/operating 3GPP 4G packet core components (e.g., MME, SGW, PGW,
-PCRF, Gi LAN, ePDG)
-Strong hands-on experience with IP routing in Juniper and/or Cisco environments
-Proven integration and operational experience with RADIUS authentication and accounting systems

Desirable Skills / Experience

Preferred
-Ability to build business relationships, negotiating what works for both parties, in a collaborative approach.
-Proven experience with Juniper and Cisco routing in ISP or enterprise environments.
-Experience integrating RADIUS services for mobile user access.
-Strong stakeholder management and mentoring capabilities.
-As someone in a more senior grade, you’ll have experience of coaching and able to support the development of Network Design Professionals and Apprentices within the team.
