About the role
Network Cloud is a large-scale private cloud platform underpinning critical BT network services. As BT continues its transformation towards cloud native networking, Kubernetes has become a strategic platform component, enabling the deployment and operation of modern network functions and supporting services.
The Kubernetes Platform Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, automation and operation of Kubernetes-based platform capabilities across the Network Cloud estate. The role works within the Platform Engineering team to develop and improve BT’s Kubernetes managed service, ensuring it remains secure, scalable, reliable and operationally supportable.
This is a hands on engineering role that combines platform development, automation, operations and continuous improvement.
You will be joining a growing platform engineering function with the opportunity to influence technical direction, contribute to strategic platform initiatives, and help shape the future of cloud-native infrastructure within BT.
This role is hybrid (3 days in office) in either Manchester / Ipswich / London
What you’ll be doing
- Design, build and enhance Kubernetes platform capabilities within BT private cloud environments.
- Develop and maintain platform automation using Infrastructure as Code and software engineering best practices.
- Implement and improve deployment, upgrade and lifecycle management processes for Kubernetes clusters and supporting services.
- Integrate networking, monitoring, logging and security capabilities into the Kubernetes platform.
- Support platform reliability through proactive improvement and troubleshooting
- Contribute to incident resolution and problem management activities for platform services.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute to proof of concept activities.
- Support the transition of new platform capabilities into production and drive continuous service improvement.
Essential Skills / Experience
- Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting experience.
- Hands-on experience deploying and operating Kubernetes platforms in production environments.
- Experience deploying or operating platforms within private cloud or on-premises environments.
- Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or Ansible.
- Strong networking fundamentals.
- Experience with CI/CD, GitOps and automation practices.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Experience with OpenStack or VMware environments.
- Experience with Rancher/RKE2 and Cluster API-based Kubernetes lifecycle management.
- Experience with bare-metal provisioning and infrastructure lifecycle management.
- Scripting and automation experience using Python or Golang.
- Knowledge of enterprise storage platforms and Kubernetes CSI integrations.
- Experience with HashiCorp Vault, PKI and certificate management.
- Understanding of Telco Cloud technologies including SR-IOV, Multus and DPDK.
