About the role

The Instructional Design Professional is responsible for designing and developing high-quality, effective learning solutions that address validated business needs. Using a blend of learning approaches, technologies and adult learning principles, they create engaging learning experiences that support the adoption of new systems, products, processes and ways of working.

Working closely with stakeholders, subject matter experts and change teams, they translate business requirements into impactful learning programmes using strong consulting and design skills.

The role is also responsible for maintaining and evolving existing learning solutions, ensuring content remains effective, relevant and aligned with developments in technology, learning practices and business priorities.

Contributing directly to BT's transformation agenda, the Instructional Design Professional creates scalable face-to-face and digital learning content. Working alongside digital design colleagues, they develop simulations, videos and performance support resources that build colleague capability at pace. They utilise modern learning technologies, data insights and AI-enabled tools, where appropriate, to enhance the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of learning solutions while maintaining a strong focus on learner experience, accessibility and business outcomes.

What you’ll be doing

•Produce and deliver smart, evidence-based, commercially driven learning solutions that are effective and efficient from both a learner and business perspective.
•Manage the design of learning solutions by producing, communicating, and coordinating plans, updates, and resources to ensure a smooth development and deployment cycle, with great attention to detail and the highest quality standards.
•Demonstrate a customer-first mindset, engaging with stakeholders to ensure both the customer and learner are at the heart of every solution.
•Utilise, promote, and adopt digital approaches to learning that support our long-term digital strategy.
•Maintain and continuously enhance the portfolio of learning collateral.
•Demonstrate an inquisitive mindset and apply the latest learning innovations and industry trends in a pragmatic and impactful way.
•Take accountability for personal growth, as well as supporting the development and success of peers through a high-challenge, high-support mindset.
•Build effective relationships and feedback loops across the Learning & Development team to foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Essential Skills / Experience

•Proven experience in learning and instructional design, creating engaging, blended learning solutions for adult learners using recognised design methodologies.
•Strong performance consulting capability, including learning needs analysis, performance gap identification, solution design and measurement of business impact.
•Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into learning solutions, influence stakeholders and manage multiple projects effectively.

Desirable Skills / Experience

•Experience creating engaging digital learning solutions, including e-learning content, using authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adapt, or similar platforms.
•Knowledge of designing and delivering learning for virtual environments, with an understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
•Strong communication, storyboarding, presentation and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
•Experience using AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, within the learning design process, alongside an understanding of AI-enabled learning experiences and responsible AI principles.
•Knowledge of learning analytics, including the use of data and insights to inform design decisions and measure learner engagement and performance.
•Experience working within agile project environments, organisational transformation programmes, or change initiatives, with an understanding of change management approaches.
•Experience coaching others, leading quality assurance activities, and working within technology-driven environments such as telecommunications, customer service, sales, operational or technical learning functions
