About the role

You will serve as the primary contact for journalists and social media influencers and other external stakeholders, delivering against BT’s ambition to change its perception from a telco to a tech company.

This means developing relationships with key media contacts as well as building alliances across industry, professional associations and among BT’s own experts and leaders.

You will build awareness and favourable image of the company and ensure BT’s business interests are represented through both, coverage in traditional media and engagement in social media.

You will manage internal communications in the region with a goal to improve employee engagement and work with the Purposeful Business team on the delivery of their projects and programmes in the Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) region.

What you will be doing (Role Accountabilities)

  • Provide timely intelligence and communications counsel to the business - in particular Global’s senior management - on developments in the region as well as issues that could potentially impact on BT brand, both externally and internally
  • Accountable for delivery of external communications strategy in AMEA
  • Manage & execute conventional and social media strategy across all key markets in AMEA, including South Africa, the UAE, India, Singapore, China and Australia
  • Support regional MD and his leadership team with a clear messaging strategy for engagement with external stakeholders, including media, customers, partners and other key opinion formers
  • Advise on media and content approach, including insights on current issues, themes and opportunities
  • Design and deliver internal communications strategy for AMEA
  • Support regional MD and his leadership team with a clear messaging strategy for internal audiences, an appropriate channel strategy and content plan
  • Design and execute programmes to increase employee motivation, optimise ways of working and improve behaviours, in line with BT’s values and Global’s internal communications strategy
  • Liaise with the Global Corporate Affairs team for the regional execution of global initiatives – including change programmes, engagement initiatives and crisis management
  • Drive best practice in the effective use of online internal platforms and channels such as Workplace and intranet
  • Drive up and maintain presence in BT offices across the region through innovative engagement strategies

What you’ll need to succeed (Skills & Experience)

  • Storytelling with data: strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to business audiences
  • Business acumen: Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases)
  • Proven skills in communicating change in complex environments
  • Excellent stakeholder relationship management skills
  • Persuasive communicator, with great presentation skills
  • Excellent programme management skills with the capability to juggle a range of large projects and consistently deliver results
  • Ability to operate within a multinational matrix environment and a culture of sharing and exploiting best practice
  • Ability to make decisions and respond rapidly under crisis situations and in line with business needs
  • Experience in a senior PR/media relations role in the global B2B space, with a proven track record in technology PR (IT, cybersecurity, telco, etc)
  • Degree and post graduate qualification in a related subject (e.g. Business / Marketing / Communications).
  • Excellent media contacts in the B2B technology space
  • Great track record in managing internal communications
  • Crisis communications
  • Experience in M&A communications
  • Superb written and spoken communications skills in English, other languages a plus
  • Agency and budget management experience

About the role

The Communications Specialist delivers tactical strategies to develop the Groups reputation with policymakers, media, third-party and various trade associations to ensure that the Group stays abreast as the social and regulatory environment evolves.

What you’ll be doing

1.Plans and produces compelling, audience-specific content to support events and engagement programmes within the business unit, ensuring alignment with the Groups reputation framework and strategic priorities.
2.Manages a broad and complex portfolio of external engagements and communications, including virtual and physical convenings, social media, thought leadership, and customer insights, to enhance stakeholder impact and brand visibility.
3.Identifies and cultivates strategic partnerships with governments, multi-lateral agencies, industry bodies, interest groups, and thought leaders to strengthen the Groups external presence and influence.
4.Oversees the planning, coordination, and participation in high-impact meetings, events, and conferences, ensuring outreach activities are targeted, relevant, and contribute to the Groups reputation and stakeholder engagement goals.
5.Ensures cross-functional alignment with Marketing, Brand, Policy, and Public Affairs teams to maintain consistency of messaging and reinforce the Groups strategic narrative.
6.Champions continuous learning and capability development by sharing insights on emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in communications, fostering innovation and adaptability within the team.
