About the role

The role holder will report to the Principal Lawyer, DACH and CEER and will support this European region. This role holds accountability for legal matters for the Business CFU in the German region and will be responsible for engaging with stakeholders regarding complex commercial and legal matters in this region.

What you’ll be doing

The holder of this role:

  • Will act as the lead lawyer on legally complex and high value transactions with Business’s customers with a focus for Germany.
  • Will give clear and pragmatic legal guidance (and formal advice where appropriate) on projects and contracts that helps Business understand and mitigate legal risk.
  • Will be the single contact for stakeholders on legal issues and escalations requiring legal support.
  • Will provide clear briefings and escalate concerns to management and stakeholders.
  • Will work with members of the European Legal team on a range of legal matters, including disputes, product launches, litigation, employment issues, new initiatives, legal interpretation and legislative changes.
  • Will develop and comply with BT’s policies and strategies, including development of standard contracts for the sale of Business’s standard products and services.
  • Will engage the support of external legal providers when required and approved, providing guidance / direction as a matter progresses.
  • Will ensure that all business activities – including customer sales, standard terms development and product launches – follow the relevant governance and compliance policies and process.
  • Will identify regulatory, governance and compliance issues and refer them to senior management and to their line manager.
  • Will act as an escalation point to help support the legal work being conducted by our legal process outsource providers.
  • Will build excellent, collaborative working relationships with peers across Legal & Co Sec supporting Business and the wider BT Group.
  • Will make a material and positive contribution to Legal, Reg, Compliance & Co Sec strategy, goals and initiatives.
  • Will ensure that business is conducted in accordance with BT’s regulatory restrictions (including the Commitments), competition law and BT policy, including The BT Way and BT’s trading policies

The role holder will

  • work with bid teams to agree a strategy / approach to respond to customer requirements, including requrests for proposals responses and customer-issued contracts.
  • Devise the strategy / approach to deal with issues that arise during the life of a contract, both due to external factors or complaints from a customer.
  • Work with the product legal team to develop the best means to develop new products and services in a way that balances risk and reward for Global.
  • Work with the principal lawyer DACH and CEER on legal and compliance matters, as instructed from time to time to execute on Business and legal strategy.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Business acumen: knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy.
  • Pragmatic: must be pragmatic and solutions driven.
  • Organized: demonstrate the ability to manage workload, prioritising where appropriate and setting (and meeting) realistic expectations with business partners.
  • Flexible: Ability to adapt quickly to, and be supportive of change.
  • Language skills: Must have job level proficiency in English. German language skills at B2 (upper‑intermediate) level, enabling confident professional communication in both spoken and written form.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Education: Qualified lawyer with a background in German law
  • Specialization: Ideally with a specialization in EU and/or international IT law
  • Digital Skills: Strong knowledge of common digital application standards, including AI tools, and hands‑on experience with legal‑tech AI solutions
  • PQE: 3 year Post Qualified Experience or similar relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience: Desirable to have some experience in dealing with high value and complex commercial contract issues / transactions in an international company.
