About the role
Network Cloud is responsible for delivering BT’s strategic private cloud platforms, which underpin a wide range of BT services and support business-critical and regulated workloads.
The Network Cloud VMware Platforms team designs, builds and operates VMware-based private cloud infrastructure. This includes VMware Cloud Foundation, compute and storage platforms, and integration with modern networking and security services.
This role is critical to ensuring BT’s private cloud platforms are secure, resilient and scalable. The infrastructure delivered by this team provides shared, multi-tenant services consumed by multiple internal BT programmes and platforms.
In this role, you will contribute to the design, standardisation and operation of BT’s compute and virtualisation architecture. You will work across VMware Cloud Foundation, vSphere and storage platforms, collaborating closely with network, security and operations teams to deliver reliable and consistent cloud infrastructure.
Your work will directly influence the stability, performance and scalability of BT’s private cloud platforms and support BT’s wider cloud and digital transformation strategy.
This role is hybrid (3 days in office) & can be based in either Manchester / Ipswich / London
SC Clearance eligibility is required for the role
What you’ll be doing
- Design, build and support VMware-based private cloud infrastructure.
- Contribute to High Level and Low Level Designs aligned to BT architecture and engineering standards.
- Support the deployment and lifecycle management of VMware Cloud Foundation environments.
- Operate and optimise compute and storage platforms, including performance, availability and capacity planning.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex, high-severity infrastructure issues.
- Work closely with network and security teams to integrate compute platforms with NSX and underlay networks.
- Contribute to automation and infrastructure-as-code initiatives to improve consistency and efficiency.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, runbooks and operational procedures.
- Drive standardisation across platforms to ensure operational consistency and reliability.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other engineering teams and stakeholders.
- Undertake additional tasks as required in support of wider Network Cloud objectives.
- On-call support: Participation in an on-call rota (approximately 1 week in every 3), providing out-of-hours cover on a 24x7 basis. This is an on-call responsibility and does not mean continuous working during that period.
Essential Skills / Experience
This role requires strong operational and design expertise in VMware and compute infrastructure, with the ability to operate confidently in large-scale enterprise environments.

- Compute and virtualisation platform design and operation
- Storage technologies including vSAN or equivalent
- Experience producing High Level and Low Level Designs
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
- Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals
- Ability to work across both design and operational activities
Experience Required for the Role
- 3 years or more in a hands-on infrastructure role, including 2nd and 3rd line support, AND 3 years+ Design Experience.
- Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals and data centre infrastructure.
- Experience working with multi-tenant private cloud or shared infrastructure platforms.
- Exposure to multi-site or multi-data-centre environments.
- Knowledge of public or hybrid cloud concepts.
- Relevant professional certifications such as VMware VCP, Cisco CCNA or CCNP, or equivalent experience.
- Microsoft certifications such as MCSA, or equivalent experience.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work effectively across teams.
