About the role

Ships and submarines represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. As an Engineer/Senior Engineer within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of ships for both our UK and international customers.

You will get involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our customers in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for both naval and commercial vessels, through the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses. More specifically you may expect to get experience of undertaking:

• Surveys to support design changes and investigations;

• System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling;

• Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues;

• Project Management of engineering tasks and projects;

• Engaging with the wider industry;

• Secondments to industry and the UK MOD to broaden your experience.

You will also have an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, including submarines and a range of broader consulting projects within our other market areas.

Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to support; enhancing global understanding of ship issues, the development of future ship design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools and processes.

The majority of people within the capability are based in the Bath and Bristol area, however, the capability is part of the UK and Europe region so a balance of in-office, remote and hybrid working will be considered (we also have offices in Glasgow, Plymouth and Southampton). Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites will be necessary as and when required (occasional overseas travel may be required). This is a full-time fee earning role.

You will ideally be professional qualified (registered as a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate professional body or Incorporated supported by domain experience) or demonstrate you are on the path for registration.

You will have good interpersonal skills with experience of communicating your work to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner through meetings, written reports and/or presentations.

The following skills are considered essential:

· Understanding of the issues pertaining to the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms;

· Ability to produce ship system schematics (in AutoCAD), ship and technical specifications and provide input into ship design bid response documentation;
