Systems Engineer – Operations Centre product
Job Location: SA-Edinburgh Parks. This is an onsite role and 9 day fortnight working arrangement can be considered.

Role Description:
The Operations Centre is the central control subsystem for the OTHR system, controlling the receive and transmit subsystems, as well as being the operator interface to the system.
Working within a small team and engaging with other engineering discipline teams, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the Operation Centre’s design by extending it to include multiple product variants meeting both Australian and Canadian OTHR systems’ needs.
The role will include updating the specifications, design and tests for the Operations Centre, as well as demonstrating technical problem solving through targeted trade studies and detailed investigations to solve key design issues.
This exciting opportunity will allow a systems engineer to be hands on and impact the design of the Operations Centre used in both Australia and Canada and be involved in a huge defence export for Australia.
Core Duties:
- Perform design activities
- Demonstrate strong problem solving ability to resolve key issues
- Perform trade studies to assess the merit of different design or tool options
- Refine the design of algorithms through analysing the algorithms performance under new conditions or within new environments
- Assess customer provided algorithms for suitability by analysing the algorithm and assessing its performance and ability to meet the need within the Operations Centre
- Work with multiple Software Teams to ensure the Operations Centre design matches the implementation through design updates as the implementation matures and by communicating to the software teams the results of the design and trade study activities
Essential Skills:
- A University degree level engineering qualification preferably within a Systems, Electronics, Software or Mechatronics discipline
- Previous exposure to large software program (desirable)
- Exposure to different phases of systems engineering processes in a defence environment (desirable)
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well within a team environment or autonomously
- Ability to partner with and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to obtain the necessary deliverables
- Defence security clearance NV1
- Eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic In Arms (ITAR) regulations
The Team
The High Frequency Sensing team is part of the BAE Systems Defence Delivery Business Unit and delivers advanced Over The Horizon Radar (OTHR) capability across the full lifecycle, spanning acquisition, sustainment and research and development – with all design wholly undertaken within Australia. It brings together expertise in large and medium scale wide area surveillance systems to support sovereign capability and operational readiness for Australian and international export customers. It is an exciting time to join the team with major upgrades occurring for Australian and US customer systems, evolving sustainment focus to ensure capability readiness for the Australian Defence Force customer, and mobilisation of a major export acquisition program to Canada, as well as future growth opportunities constantly on the go. Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) and Arctic Over The Horizon Radar
The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is a connected series of three remote over-the-horizon radars (OTHR) located in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The state-of-the-art defence radar system provides wide-area surveillance at ranges of 1,000 to 3,000 kilometres and plays a vital role in supporting the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) air and maritime operations, border protection, disaster relief, and rescue operations.
