Job Location: The roles are onsite based in either Adelaide or Melbourne.

Role Description:

We are building something extraordinary in the High Frequency (HF) technology space and are looking for Network Engineers to join us on this journey. This is your chance to be part of a pioneering project that pushes the boundaries of communications technology. You will be working on the world leading Jindalee Over the Horizon Radar Network.

Reporting to the JORN ICT Network Lead, you will be responsible to analyse, design and implement defined technical scope of works within the JORN ICT Group to develop new projects and capabilities and to maintain and administer the existing system.

Core Duties:

  • Develop and implement network engineering changes within a defined scope of work, including analysis of requirements, design, reviews, implementation, testing and signoff in accordance with the ICT Engineering Development Plan and other applicable plans and processes
  • Creating and updating engineering documentation including designs, drawings, manuals and associated artefacts
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical and systems engineering proficiency
  • Working with a team, undertake engineering activities within own competence without day-to-day guidance or supervision, including liaison with customers and stakeholders as appropriate
  • Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority
  • Foster a culture of openness, responsibility and consistent correctness and completeness
  • Work within agreed project technical, cost and schedule constraints
  • Seek and share good practice and knowledge to continuously improve own practices. Be aware of and contribute to relevant BAE Systems Australia engineering communities of interest
  • Occasional out of hours work maybe required and the possibility of travel periodically to remote sites for periods of up to two weeks and on occasions longer

Essential Skills:

  • A background in ICT or Systems Engineering and a good understanding of engineering practices and methods is considered essential
  • Hold a proven track record of working in an ICT environment ideally within defence industry
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience + vendor certifications) preferred
  • Experience in designing, implementing and supporting Enterprise networking environments including LAN, WAN and DataCentre
  • Experience designing, implementing and supporting Cisco ASA & FMC Firewalls, Cisco LAN/WAN, Cisco ISE
  • Familiarity with Agile / Scrum methodology
  • Able to balance conflicting priorities to deliver against customer and business requirements, with appropriate stakeholder management
  • Good communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders within the project
  • Proven ability to function confidently within a project team environment
  • Demonstrated problem solving, systems analysis, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong understanding of foundational technologies and ability to utilise to adapt to new systems
  • Experience with security best practices and compliance standards
  • Ability to interact effectively with colleagues within and outside their immediate team, to implement business requirements
  • Exceptional problem-solving capabilities, ability to use and adapt written and verbal communication skills to suit a variety of difference audiences is critical to this role
  • Willingness to cross-skill with other technologies, for example SysAdmin (Windows/Linux), Database Administration, Applications
  • Experience with Network Automation, including Ansible, Terraform and CI/CD pipelines will be an advantage

The Team

The High Frequency Sensing team is part of the BAE Systems Defence Delivery Business Unit and delivers advanced Over The Horizon Radar (OTHR) capability across the full lifecycle, spanning acquisition, sustainment and research and development – with all design wholly undertaken within Australia. It brings together expertise in large and medium scale wide area surveillance systems to support sovereign capability and operational readiness for Australian and international export customers. It is an exciting time to join the team with major upgrades occurring for Australian and US customer systems, evolving sustainment focus to ensure capability readiness for the Australian Defence Force customer, and mobilisation of a major export acquisition program to Canada, as well as future growth opportunities constantly on the go. We are structured as two product portfolios, proudly providing exciting opportunities to our people and critical capabilities to our Australian and international customers.

Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) and Arctic Over The Horizon Radar

The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is a connected series of three remote over-the-horizon radars (OTHR) located in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The state-of-the-art defence radar system provides wide-area surveillance at ranges of 1,000 to 3,000 kilometres and plays a vital role in supporting the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) air and maritime operations, border protection, disaster relief, and rescue operations.
