Role Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Software Engineer to join our team supporting the Hydro-METOC Information Environment (HMIE) at the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO). Reporting to the Software Engineering Team Lead, you will play a key role in the analysis, design, development, maintenance, and support of mission-critical software systems.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative environment, contributing to the ongoing reliability, performance, and enhancement of HMIE solutions. You will work closely with internal teams and customer stakeholders to investigate issues, implement improvements, and deliver high-quality software outcomes.

Core Duties:

  • Analyse, design, develop, maintain, and unit test software applications and systems.
  • Investigate, estimate, rectify, and resolve assigned incidents and Change Requests (CRs) within agreed timeframes.
  • Work collaboratively with AHO stakeholders to identify root causes of issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve HMIE performance, maintenance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Provide practical and efficient analysis, design, and testing activities for new software requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of integration and testing activities.
  • Develop documentation and actively participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical audits.
  • Ensure HMIE solutions meet all required technical objectives, standards, and customer requirements.
  • Support software deployments and conduct early morning system checks as required by prior arrangement.
  • Occasionally provide support outside of standard business hours, including weekends, evenings, and early mornings.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with team members and customer representatives.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and technical excellence.

About YOU

  • Tertiary qualification in technology, engineering or similar is required
  • Commercial experience in C# and Java development.
  • Experience with software development and collaboration tools (Microsoft products), including Visual Studio, Jira, SourceTree, Confluence, Bitbucket, FishEye and Crucible
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and best practice development methodologies.
  • Experience developing and maintaining unit tests.
  • Database experience is advantageous, particularly Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear and accurate technical documentation.
  • Defence security clearance NV1 preferred
