Role description:

In this role, you will be advising on explosives safety on new and existing processes and supporting the delivery of new processes and facilities on site. You will also be supporting the delivery of explosive licences and supporting the site deliver the safety report to ensure compliance and safe operations.

You will be responsible for communicating and hosting the competent authorities including the HSE, Environment Agency and Fire services, building strong and transparent relationships. Additionally, you will be managing a small team of process safety coordinators, providing leadership and fostering an inclusive, safety focused culture.

Core duties:

  • Acting as a subject matter expert for COMAH, explosives, process safety, and high-hazard regulatory compliance
  • Providing practical SHE guidance and support to managers, employees, and specialist teams
  • Supporting the maintenance of ER2014 licences, emergency plans, and incident investigation activities
  • Delivering and supporting high-hazard and explosive safety training to build organisational capability
  • Liaising with regulators, emergency services, and external agencies to ensure effective compliance
  • Driving continuous improvement in high-hazard safety management and provide specialist advice across Land UK

Essential skills:

  • Proven experience working in an explosive’s environment, with considerable knowledge of safety, hazards, effects, and licensing
  • Knowledge or experience within the explosives sector or other high hazard, highly regulated industries, including upper tier COMAH
  • Considerable understanding of HSE guidelines, including Explosives Regulations 2014, L150 Safety Provisions, and L151 Security Provisions
  • Experience managing explosives safety activities, including writing and maintaining clear, practical safety policies

The BAE Systems High Hazard team:

The central High Hazard function brings together SMEs across engineering and human factors to support five munitions’ sites. The team advises on high‑risk operations, explosives licensing, testing, COMAH planning, best practice, and technical justifications, while contributing to major new process and facility development projects.
