Job Title: Combat Systems Chief Engineer

Location: Portsmouth or can be any southern site, we offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Do you have operational experience of naval combat systems, CONOPS and doctrine? If so, then we currently have a vacancy to lead the engineering future within the development and delivery lines for our products that would suit you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing leadership of the engineering design and implementation approach across the Combat Systems portfolio and product strategies, ensuring a strong customer, theatre, and market focus.
  • Working with the delivery leads to develop the Combat Systems Engineering strategies that maintain a technology and capability coherence across the portfolio, providing thought leadership to its customers, supply chain and engineering business infrastructure.
  • Using the business forecasting across the engineering disciplines to; build and maintain a workforce skill strategy to ensure the right capability is available to support the programmes at the right time.
  • Assuming the Product Technical Authority role for the Combat Systems portfolio, architecting and maintaining preferred combat systems options for export and home customers
  • Building, maintaining, and fostering the integrity of the Engineering discipline
  • Developing strong, long-term relationships with the Customers, Platform Chief Engineers, Central Engineering, projects teams, partners and supplier organisations
  • Participating in the recruitment and career development of Naval Ships Combat System Technical Authorities through mentoring, coaching and contributions to Personal Development Reviews
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with key academic partners to increase the visibility of Naval Ships within the student and lecturer populations
  • Holding and exercising delegated Engineering Design Authority (EA) from the Naval Ships Engineering Director for the Combat System Portfolio
  • Reviewing, rationalising, developing, and implementing appropriate processes for Engineering assurance activities and responsibilities
  • Participating in Lifecycle Management and Design Reviews
  • Providing mentoring and support to the Delegated Design Authorities
  • Promotion of Professional Registration within the scope of EC-UK and liaison with the key Professional Engineering Institutions
  • Estimating, planning, and managing the engineering service delivery from the Naval Ships Engineering Functional Team
  • Underwriting the engineering content of all bids in the Combat System Portfolio

Your skills and experiences will include:

  • Chartered Engineer with IET or INCOSE
  • Experience of operational naval deployment as part of a command team or combat systems operation with exposure to CONOPS and doctrine.
  • A strong background in engineering, particularly in Systems Engineering Development, integration and test at both equipment and mission system levels, and related fields, is crucial. This includes understanding of systems architecture, integration, and design principles
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and lead the engineering team. This involves effective communication, decision-making, and delegation skills
  • Engineering development within a cross discipline, agile and concurrent development lifecycle
  • Building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders including customers, partners and suppliers is vital. This requires strong interpersonal skills, negotiation abilities, and the capacity to influence others
  • Being able to mentor and coach engineers, helping them develop their skills and progress in their careers, providing guidance, feedback, and support
  • Reviewing, rationalizing, and implementing appropriate processes for engineering assurance activities is important for ensuring quality and efficiency. This requires analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices is essential for delivering high-quality engineering solutions
  • Staying updated with the latest advancements in engineering technologies, methodologies, and practices is important for remaining competitive and innovative in the field
  • Encouraging and promoting professional registration within the scope of engineering institutions demonstrates a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in the field

Travel to all our sites (principally Broad Oak, New Malden, Dorchester, Portsmouth Technology Park, Frimley, Scotstoun, and Filton) will be required on a regular basis, though Combat Systems operate seamless remote working methods to minimise travel needs.
