Job Description

Location: Peterborough (Hybrid Working – Thorpe Wood House)
Salary: £65,336

Our Team

Are you passionate about setting the engineering standards that define how essential infrastructure is designed and delivered? Do you want to play a leadership role in ensuring assets are safe, resilient and deliver long‑term value for customers and the environment?

Over the coming years, Anglian Water will deliver one of the largest capital investment programmes in the UK water sector — nearly £3 billion over the next five years. From new reservoirs and advanced treatment centres to hundreds of miles of pipelines, we are investing in infrastructure that will serve millions of people across the East of England for decades.

Our Asset Standards Team sits at the heart of this programme. We define what “good” looks like by translating business intelligence, operational insight and industry best practice into clear, practical engineering standards. These standards shape every stage of design and delivery — driving safety, consistency, efficiency and sustainability across our capital programme.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and forward‑thinking Engineering Standards and Products Manager to lead our Standards and Products Team.

As custodian of Anglian Water’s asset standards, you will own the strategic direction, governance and continuous improvement of our Minimum Asset Standards (MAS), Design Manuals and Standard Products. Your work will directly influence how assets are designed, constructed and handed over — balancing cost, carbon, performance, safety and long‑term resilience.

You will lead a team of engineers and specialists, setting clear priorities and providing strong technical leadership. Working across Anglian Water and with our delivery alliances, you will ensure standards are practical, trusted, consistently applied and ready to evolve as technology, regulation and business needs change.

This is a senior technical leadership role with significant influence across the capital delivery lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Define and Deliver Strategy

Set and deliver the strategic direction for Anglian Water’s engineering standards and standard products. Ensure alignment with the Chief Engineer’s Office, Commercial Operations and our alliance partners. Lead team priorities, manage external relationships and foster a culture grounded in safety, professionalism and technical excellence.

Maintain and Improve Standards

Oversee the continuous improvement of our Minimum Asset Standards (MAS), Design Manuals and Specifications. Ensure alignment with national and international standards (including CESWI, WIMES and British Standards), while capturing lessons learned, innovation and best practice from across the industry.

Standard Products Development

Lead the development and governance of standard products and proven designs, working closely with engineering, innovation and procurement teams. Drive adoption of standard solutions that improve quality, reduce cost and carbon, and support safe, efficient construction and operation.

Governance and Collaboration

Operate clear, robust governance processes so standards are well‑evidenced, transparent and trusted.
This role requires active collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders — including designers, construction teams, operators, commercial teams, regulators and alliance partners, gathering diverse inputs and balancing competing perspectives to arrive at well‑judged, practical decisions. Success in the role depends on combining strong technical judgement with excellent interpersonal and influencing skills.

Communicate, Educate and Inspire

Champion the value of standardisation. Promote understanding and adoption of standards through clear communication, accessible systems and targeted training. Ensure engineers, designers and partners understand not just what the standards are, but why they matter.

Who We’re Looking For

You will be an accomplished engineering professional with experience providing technical leadership, leading teams and operating within structured governance environments. You’ll be confident influencing across organisational boundaries and balancing technical rigour with commercial and operational realities.

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Process Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) status with a relevant professional body
  • Significant experience in engineering design or construction, ideally within water, networks or regulated infrastructure
  • Proven leadership and line management experience
  • Strong technical judgement, problem‑solving and communication skills
  • Experience coaching, mentoring and developing engineers
  • Sound understanding of safety, regulatory and environmental requirements

You will be resilient, adaptable and comfortable navigating complex technical and stakeholder challenges — bringing people together to deliver outcomes that stand the test of time.

Why Join Us?

  • Play a defining role in shaping how one of the UK’s largest infrastructure programmes is delivered
  • Lead and develop a skilled, multi‑disciplinary team
  • Influence engineering decisions with long‑term impact on customers and the environment
  • Gain exposure to complex, high‑profile challenges and opportunities for continued professional growth

Working Arrangements

This role is based at Thorpe Wood House (TWH), Peterborough, with hybrid working.
On average, you can expect to work from the office 2–3 days per week to support collaboration and relationship‑building, with occasional visits to operational sites and partner construction locations.
