Shape one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes

At Anglian Water, we're delivering something extraordinary. The Reservoirs Programme will create two new multi-billion-pound reservoirs, the Fens Reservoir and the Lincolnshire Reservoir, securing water supplies for future generations across the East of England. Together, these projects represent the largest and most complex infrastructure schemes ever undertaken by Anglian Water and are amongst the most significant water infrastructure investments in the UK. The programme is currently progressing through the Development Consent Order process, with future delivery expected to exceed £5 billion.

This is a rare opportunity to join at a pivotal stage and help shape a project that will leave a lasting legacy for communities, the environment and future generations.

The role

As our Client Design & Engineering Manager, you'll be at the heart of programme decision-making, providing strategic technical leadership across a complex portfolio of engineering, design and constructability activities.

Working client-side, you'll provide oversight and assurance of our Programme Delivery Partner's design and engineering function, ensuring technical excellence, programme outcomes and value for money are achieved. You'll influence major decisions, guide technical strategy and ensure that the solutions being developed today will stand the test of time for decades to come.

You'll work alongside multidisciplinary teams spanning programme delivery, consenting, planning, land, environment, commercial, procurement and stakeholder management, helping drive progress through one of the most challenging and rewarding infrastructure programmes in the sector.

What you'll be doing

  • Providing strategic technical oversight across engineering, design and constructability activities.

  • Supporting development of programme design strategies, processes and technical requirements.

  • Reviewing and accepting key engineering outputs and deliverables on behalf of Anglian Water.

  • Ensuring technical integrity is maintained across scope, programme, cost and prioritisation decisions.

  • Leading the resolution of complex technical challenges and risks.

  • Acting as a technical representative for Anglian Water and Cambridge Water within programme governance and external stakeholder engagement.

  • Working closely with regulators, environmental bodies, utility providers and other strategic partners.

  • Championing health, safety and design risk reduction throughout the programme lifecycle.

Why this role is different

Few opportunities allow you to influence infrastructure at this scale. You'll be helping deliver nationally significant projects that will improve climate resilience, support regional growth, protect the environment and secure water resources for millions of customers.

This isn't just about engineering excellence. It's about creating infrastructure that future generations will depend upon. You will have visibility at the highest levels of programme governance, influence major technical decisions and help define how some of the UK's most important water infrastructure will be designed and delivered.

What we're looking for

We're looking for an experienced engineering leader who thrives in complex, high-profile environments and can bring strategic thinking alongside deep technical expertise. You'll have:

  • Proven engineering leadership experience on major infrastructure or Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).

  • Significant technical expertise in a relevant discipline such as dam engineering, river engineering or similarly complex infrastructure.

  • A relevant engineering degree.

  • Experience managing consultancy partners and major engineering contracts.

  • Strong stakeholder management capability, including experience working with regulators and external partners.

  • The ability to balance technical excellence with programme outcomes and commercial considerations.

As a valued employee, you’ll be entitled to:

  • Personal private health care

  • Life assurance (up to 8 x salary)

  • Personal accident cover (up to 5 x salary)

  • Double-matched pension (maximum 7% employee/14% employer contribution)

  • 26 days annual leave – rising with length of service and the ability to buy more

  • Excellent family friendly policies, such as 26 weeks full pay for maternity / adoption leave, as well as 4 weeks paid paternity / partner leave. Opportunity for shared parental pay

  • Bonus scheme – up to 15%

  • Flexible benefits to support your wellbeing and lifestyle.

Inclusion at Anglian Water:

We value the representation & diversity within our communities. Inclusion is for every one and we are an equal opportunity employer, which means we’ll consider all suitably qualified applicants regardless of gender identity or expression, ethnic origin, nationality, religion or beliefs, age, sexual orientation, disability status or any other protected characteristic. We recruit and develop our people based on merit and their passion for creating better outcomes, and we’re committed to creating an environment where all our colleagues feel they belong.

Join us and leave a legacy

Water is essential to life, and the decisions we make today will impact generations to come.

If you're excited by the chance to shape landmark infrastructure, influence industry-leading engineering solutions and be part of a programme that will define the future of water resilience in the UK, we'd love to hear from you. Help us build something that lasts for generations.

Closing date: Sunday 6th September
