Job Title: Archaeology and Heritage Assessor
Location: Peterborough (Hybrid Working)
Salary: £45,000

Our Team

Are you passionate about protecting our historic environment while enabling vital infrastructure that supports communities across the East of England? Do you want to play a key role in shaping the archaeological and heritage strategy behind one of the UK’s largest and most ambitious capital investment programmes?

Anglian Water is entering a transformative period. Over the next five years, we will deliver nearly £9 billion of investment to secure resilient water supplies, protect and enhance the natural environment, and support sustainable growth across one of the fastest-growing regions in the UK.

Our Enabling Team plays a crucial role in making this possible. We ensure that archaeology and heritage requirements are understood early, managed effectively, and embedded into project delivery. By working collaboratively with planners, engineers, construction teams and local authorities, we protect cultural assets while enabling the smooth delivery of essential infrastructure.

The Role

We’re looking for an experienced and proactive Archaeology and Heritage Assessor to lead archaeology and heritage inputs across Anglian Water’s capital programme.

Reporting to the Enabling Manager, you’ll develop and implement the archaeology and heritage strategy for Anglian Water, ensuring clear, consistent processes that minimise risk, support timely approvals and uphold statutory and environmental responsibilities.

You’ll advise on a diverse portfolio of projects—from pipelines and treatment works to nature-based solutions and network improvements—ensuring “right first time” delivery and supporting the business in meeting planning, environmental and heritage requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Programme Delivery

• Provide strategic direction for archaeology and heritage across Anglian Water’s capital programme
• Drive risk-based approaches that reduce uncertainty, streamline delivery and strengthen planning outcomes
• Produce clear, high-quality technical deliverables to support planning submissions and project development
• Influence early design decisions to remove unnecessary risk, time and cost
• Collaborate across engineering, planning and delivery teams to enable efficient and environmentally responsible delivery

Stakeholder Engagement

• Lead proactive engagement with Local Planning Authorities and statutory bodies
• Build strong relationships with internal environmental and heritage specialists to ensure alignment across all programmes

Technical Expertise

• Develop and maintain the archaeological fieldwork risk strategy
• Create standardised approaches and templates for heritage deliverables, including digital formats
• Provide technical guidance on archaeology and heritage requirements across project stages
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, security and environmental legislation and standards

Digital Innovation

• Use digital tools and data to improve efficiency and streamline processes

Safer Every Day

• Promote continuous improvement in health and safety
• Ensure safe working practices, audits and reporting are completed to required standards
• Champion Anglian Water’s zero-accident culture

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll be a skilled archaeology or heritage professional who is confident operating in complex, fast-moving project environments. You’ll combine strong technical knowledge with excellent communication and influencing skills, enabling you to balance heritage considerations with programme needs.

Essential qualifications and experience:

• Degree (or equivalent) in archaeology, heritage or a related discipline
• Significant experience delivering archaeology or heritage inputs on large capital or infrastructure programmes
• Experience completing surveys and preparing reports for EIA Screening Opinions and planning documentation
• Ability to build strong relationships with LPAs, statutory consultees and internal teams
• Strong understanding of planning, environmental and heritage legislation

Desirable:

• Membership of a relevant professional institute or eligibility to join

You’ll be innovative, digitally aware and eager to explore new technologies and approaches that support efficiency, reduce risk and enhance quality.

Why Join Us?

• Play a key role in protecting the region’s archaeological and cultural heritage
• Shape and deliver the heritage strategy for one of the UK’s largest infrastructure investment programmes
• Work across a diverse range of impactful projects
• Collaborate with specialists and stakeholders across Anglian Water
• Join a supportive, forward-thinking team that values innovation
