Senior Specialist: Actuarial

Role Purpose/Business Unit:

• Actuarial: To provide actuarial support to the Head of Actuarial on all matters relating to life insurance reporting, pricing and capital management;
• This role is critical to ensuring compliance with all regulatory reporting requirements, thereby mitigating the risk of regulatory penalties, sanctions, or licence suspension.
• In addition, the role plays a key part in supporting business growth through the pricing, development, and ongoing management of profitable products that drive revenue generation and sustainable earnings growth.

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Financial Reporting

• Monthly and annual liability valuations are required for the life insurance portfolios, including typical IBNR and DCF techniques for the valuation of actuarial liabilities under IFRS 17. The candidate will also be responsible for the development and maintenance of all valuation models; Value of New Business calculation and reporting; and for producing cash flow projections for budgeting purposes. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to oversee and/or review the work of junior analysts when performing monthly management reporting.

2. Product Development

• The candidate will assist with pricing and product development of life products in a competitive, profitable and sustainable manner, working closely with Vodacom’s chosen partners. Regular competitor analysis is required to ensure products remain competitive. The candidate will also assist with product management, including ensuring that policy documents, marketing material, training guides and sales scripts are true to the original product design and specifications.

3. Capital Management

• Regular capital calculations are required across both licences to understand solvency measures at any point in time. The candidate will assist with the compilation of various statutory returns.

4. Solvency Assessment Management

• The candidate will take ownership of the actuarial models used to calculate the solvency capital requirements under the SAM regime.

5. Experience Investigations

• Detailed data analysis will be performed to provide business intelligence in order to enhance decision making and to serve as input into valuation assumption setting.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

• Mathematical, Statistical or Actuarial degree
• 5-7 years of experience in the financial services industry, with a focus on life insurance reporting
• Experience overseeing the work of junior analysts would be advantageous
• Sound numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Highly energetic, innovative and pro-active individual, with the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

• Experience in an actuarial reporting role is essential
• Analytical problem-solving skills.
• Good business acumen and understanding of the role of the capability in contributing to business value
• Comfortable with a range of Actuarial valuation techniques
• Ability to function with a high degree of autonomy
• Strong time-management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities
• Excellent relationship building and influencing skills, with the ability to oversee the work of junior analysts
