Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Regulatory Controller Trade Effluent to join United Utilities in Rochdale covering the Greater Manchester area. This role plays a vital part in protecting our wastewater network and the environment by controlling and monitoring trade effluent discharges into our sewers and treatment works.

You will be part of a friendly, professional, and highly motivated Trade Effluent team, working closely with a fellow Regulatory Controller in Rochdale and the wider team based in Davyhulme & Bury. Managing a dedicated portfolio of non-household customers, primarily across Manchester city centre, you will take ownership of ensuring compliance while building strong, trusted relationships with retailers and stakeholders.

This is a varied and dynamic role with a balanced mix of office and field-based work, with around half your time spent on the road carrying out site visits using a provided electric van. You will need to be organised, proactive, and confident in managing your own workload, balancing planned activities with reactive work, while always supported by a knowledgeable and collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with retailers on behalf of non-household customers using the JIRA case management system to manage trade effluent queries, applications, and sample notifications in line with agreed service levels
  • Carry out sampling and meter readings in line with planned schedules, applying Trade Effluent Policy procedures to ensure effective control through robust consent conditions
  • Monitor discharge data and conduct on site testing to ensure compliance with consent standards and regulatory requirements
  • Gather and present evidence to support enforcement action where non compliance has impacted or could impact United Utilities, its assets, or the environment
  • Provide out of hours support to manage incidents relating to trade effluent discharges and ensure timely resolution

Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of trade effluent regulations and environmental legislation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, with experience using systems such as JIRA, TEMS, WALTO, OMS, and Access
  • Experience working within a health and safety focused environment, including the use of specialist equipment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with both internal teams and customers
  • Ability to work independently with a proactive mindset, managing your time efficiently and prioritising a mix of planned and reactive tasks
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage your own portfolio of customers
  • Willingness to participate in the Trade Effluent standby rota

Essential Qualifications

  • HNC or BSc or equivalent in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline
  • Full and valid driving licence

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to take ownership of your own customer portfolio while being part of a close knit and supportive team that values collaboration, expertise, and doing the right thing. You will enjoy a role that offers genuine variety, combining office based work with time out in the field, supported by the use of an electric vehicle and the flexibility to manage your day effectively.

Working across a high-profile customer base in Manchester city centre, you will build meaningful relationships while playing a crucial role in protecting vital infrastructure and safeguarding the environment. You will be trusted to work independently yet always have the backing of an experienced and approachable team when you need it.
