Job Description

Mechanical Field Service Engineer | Blackburn | £40,232

Are you a skilled mechanical engineer who enjoys solving problems, working independently, and keeping critical assets performing at their best? Following continued investment and growth across our Bioresources operations, we're expanding the team and have another opportunity for a Mechanical Field Service Engineer to join United Utilities' Bioresources Lancashire team. This role will play a vital part in maintaining the equipment that supports essential wastewater and renewable energy operations across the region.

This permanent, field-based position offers plenty of variety, combining planned maintenance, fault finding, equipment installation, and asset improvement activities. You'll work across multiple sites, supporting the safe and reliable operation of key mechanical assets while helping us deliver excellent service to our customers and protect the environment.

With the freedom to manage your own workload and the backing of an experienced team, you'll have the opportunity to apply your expertise, develop new skills, and make a tangible impact every day.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Delivering planned, preventative and reactive maintenance across a diverse range of mechanical assets, ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational.
  • Diagnosing faults, identifying root causes, and implementing effective repair solutions to minimise downtime and improve asset performance.
  • Installing, replacing, and commissioning mechanical equipment including pumps, valves, mixers, pipework, flow meters, and actuators in line with engineering standards.
  • Completing accurate maintenance records, job reports, and asset data updates using company systems.
  • Working collaboratively with operational teams, electrical engineers, and contractors to deliver maintenance activities, site improvements, and project works.
  • Supporting capital investment and operational projects, including asset upgrades, replacements, commissioning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintaining compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards while working across a range of operational environments.

Managing your own schedule and travel requirements, ensuring a responsive service while identifying opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, and value for money.

What You'll Bring

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or time-served apprenticeship or equivalent
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Proven mechanical maintenance experience gained within utilities, manufacturing, process, or other industrial environments, with strong fault-finding and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Strong planning, organisational, communication, and IT skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and priorities effectively.
  • A proactive and flexible approach, with the ability to adapt to changing operational demands and solve problems in a safe and methodical manner.
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces and develop expertise in specialist maintenance areas where required.

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to build a rewarding engineering career while working on a wide variety of mechanical assets across multiple sites. No two days are the same, giving you exposure to different technologies, challenges, and projects that will continuously develop your technical skills and experience.

You'll enjoy the freedom to manage your own workload and make technical decisions, while still having the support of an experienced team behind you. Whether you're fault-finding in the field, delivering planned maintenance, or supporting asset improvement projects, you'll play a visible role in keeping essential services running for millions of customers across the North West.

Beyond the day-to-day engineering work, you'll have the chance to broaden your expertise, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and gain involvement in asset upgrades and capital projects. It's a role where your skills are valued, your ideas can make a difference, and your contribution has a tangible impact on operational performance and environmental outcomes.

Benefits

  • 26 days’ annual leave, rising by one day for each completed holiday year (served up to a maximum of 30days) plus 8 bank holidays
  • Competitive pension with up to 14% employer contribution and life cover
  • Performance related bonus of up to 7.5% plus recognition awards
  • Company funded healthcare plan and wellbeing support including mental health resources and Employee Assistance Programme
  • Access to discounts, gym savings, and flexible benefits through MORE Choices
  • Financial wellbeing support including Salary Finance and Wealth at Work

If you're an experienced mechanical engineer looking for a role that offers autonomy, variety, and the chance to work on assets that matter, we'd love to hear from you.
