The Role
To act as the custodian of the drainage for their respective area and will be responsible for improving the overall performance in collaboration with their respective Drainage Performance Engineer including monitoring operational spend and deciding on most cost effective solution, to enable proper network management.
To ensure reactive resolution and customer satisfaction identifying high risk needs which require further focus to prevent repeat. To champion resolution (within reason) to significantly reduce the volume of reactive work currently undertaken in their area. In order to do this the Drainage Delivery Engineer will have to understand the day-to-day reactive work being undertaken in the Drainage area to drive improvement and prompt resolution, as well as working in collaboration with the Drainage Performance Engineer suggesting analysis of a range of performance / predictive data to proactively manage the network and enable proper network management.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Regulatory compliance & safety: Ensure full adherence to wastewater policies, Environment Agency regulations, and health & safety standards, acting as the responsible person for network activities.
- Performance improvement & incident reduction: Enhance drainage and asset performance through proactive planning, technical input, and initiatives to reduce flooding, pollution, and repeat incidents.
- Data accuracy & reporting: Maintain reliable, accurate, and complete regulatory records (e.g. WIRS), contribute to reports, and keep risk management databases up to date.
- Stakeholder & customer management: Build strong relationships, handle communications, respond to incidents and enquiries, and work to improve customer satisfaction and reduce complaints.
- Operational oversight & support: Manage incidents (including major events), support field teams, monitor budgets and follow-up work, and identify investment or maintenance needs across the network.
What We Are Looking For:
- Qualifications & industry knowledge: HNC in Civil or related field is essential (degree desirable), with strong expertise in sewer operations, maintenance, sewerage law, pumping stations, and regulatory frameworks (Ofwat, CDM, NRSWA, Confined Spaces).
- Health, safety & compliance awareness: Solid understanding of health & safety standards and wastewater policies, ensuring safe and compliant working practices.
- Technical & analytical capability: Strong problem-solving, analytical, budget awareness, and cost estimation skills, with the ability to identify improvements and opportunities.
- Communication & stakeholder engagement: Excellent interpersonal, communication, influencing, and customer service skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and external organisations.
- Personal effectiveness & operational skills: Highly organised, able to work under pressure, manage time effectively, use initiative, produce reports/presentations, and proficient in IT systems, with a full UK driving licence.
