Job Description

United Utilities is committed to strengthening its risk‑based, long‑term asset investment approach so we can continue delivering great water for a stronger, greener and healthier North West. Our Asset Health Strategy team plays a central role in developing the systems, insight and modelling capability that support evidence‑based planning across water, wastewater and bioresources.

We’re enhancing our asset management system with new tools such as Copperleaf, Exasol, Databricks, ArcGIS Online and Power BI, giving us the ability to make smarter, more transparent investment decisions. This is an exciting opportunity to join a team at the forefront of shaping how the business plans for future resilience.

The Role

We are looking for an Asset Health Development Manager to lead the development of United Utilities’ long‑term asset health modelling and prediction capability. Your work will support the business in understanding asset condition, performance and deterioration across our network, helping us plan the right investments at the right time.

Working closely with the Head of Asset Health Strategy, you will provide expert guidance on modelling, asset health and resilience. You will influence key decisions, support regulatory submissions such as the Price Review, and contribute to long-term planning frameworks including the Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) and the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP).

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys using data, models and insight to inform strategy, while collaborating across a wide range of technical and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and long‑term sustainability of United Utilities’ asset health modelling and prediction capability
  • Direct the work of a small team of data analysts in line with United Utilities’ asset health strategy
  • Provide expert insight into current and future asset health, performance and operational resilience
  • Support the development and communication of asset health strategies that guide investment planning
  • Represent United Utilities within the wider water sector as a specialist in asset modelling, maintenance planning and resilience
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the business to influence strategy and long-term plans
  • Carry out horizon scanning across UK and global utilities to identify best practice and emerging trends
  • Contribute to major regulatory and strategic submissions such as Price Reviews, WRMP, DWMP and long‑term business plans

Why This Role Matters

This role directly shapes how United Utilities understands its asset base, predicts future performance and makes long‑term investment decisions. You’ll be developing capability that underpins critical business planning for decades to come, supporting outcomes that protect customers, communities and the environment.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in a science or engineering discipline, or significant experience in asset health, resilience or maintenance
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, able to engage stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent planning and organisational ability, managing your own workload and supporting others to meet deadlines
  • Good knowledge of asset health principles and water/wastewater/bioresources assets
  • In-depth understanding of modelling tools, techniques and analysis methods, and how they support company strategy
  • Strong awareness of the environmental, customer and stakeholder impacts of asset-related decisions

Why Join United Utilities?

You will join a supportive, forward-thinking team that is leading the evolution of asset health and strategic planning in the water industry. You’ll work with modern tools, develop new modelling approaches, and contribute to decisions that improve long‑term resilience across the North West.
