About us
GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity, and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks and espionage. At GCHQ, you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that places the emphasis on teamwork.

The role
As a Russian Language Specialist, you’ll use your linguistic expertise to translate and extract key information for our operational teams. You’ll work with a range of foreign language materials, some of which may be technical or specialised in nature. This role goes far beyond translation and transcription, requiring a deep understanding of language, cultural nuances, and socio-cultural and political structures. By drawing on this expertise, you’ll produce considered, informed conclusions and reports that accurately inform live operations.

Your advanced language skills will play a central role in shaping decisions across our organisation. The depth and accuracy of your analysis will directly support operational teams, providing clear insights that are essential to their work. Alongside your linguistic expertise, your cultural knowledge will contribute to wider discussions and forums, helping to build a more complete understanding of key issues.

You won’t be working alone. Our thriving language community at GCHQ brings together hundreds of language specialists, creating a rich environment where you can learn, grow, and thrive. Surrounded by like-minded individuals who share your passion for language, you’ll have access to a wealth of expertise and feedback to support your continued development.

About you
You don’t need any previous experience or a formal qualification in Russian to apply, but you should be a proficient user of the language to at least CEFR C1 level across all disciplines: reading, writing, speaking, and listening (see explanation below). This should be complemented by a deep understanding of the cultural context associated with the language, including aspects such as culture, history, religion, and politics. You should be fluent in English and able to translate Russian-language materials into accurate and idiomatic English. As part of our recruitment process, we’ll assess your proficiency in understanding written and spoken Russian. If you have skills in other modern foreign languages, we encourage you to highlight them, as we’re always interested in hearing about additional language capabilities.

At C1 level or higher, you’re able to:

  • understand a wide range of longer and more demanding texts and conversations
  • express ideas fluently without excessive searching for words
  • use the language effectively in social, academic, or professional situations
  • produce well-structured, detailed texts on complex topics

You can also access the CEFR self-assessment grid for more information on our requirements.

You don’t need any analytical experience, but you should be curious and enjoy piecing together information to uncover a bigger picture. You’re someone who brings attention to detail and a can-do attitude to your work, and you’re confident communicating with others.

Put yourself to the test and see if you’ve got the potential we’re looking for. Have a listen to a Russian audio clip – if you can understand most of it, we strongly encourage you to apply!

Training and development
At GCHQ, we’re passionate about supporting your growth and development as a Language Specialist. From the very start, you’ll have a dedicated mentor to help you settle into your new role and guide you every step of the way. You’ll also receive comprehensive training and support to help you get up to speed with the technical aspects of the job.

We’re committed to helping you build a fulfilling career in national security, and we’re excited to offer opportunities for growth and development. Within your first five years with us, you’ll have the opportunity to join the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CloL®) and work towards recognised professional linguist qualifications. We’re proud to invest in our people, and we’re confident that you’ll thrive in our supportive and collaborative environment.

Rewards and benefits
At GCHQ you’ll receive a starting salary of £37,892. Upon successful completion of the 6-month probationary period you’ll be eligible for an additional annual payment of £3,120 in recognition of your language skill. Other benefits include:

  • 25 days’ annual leave, rising automatically to 30 days after 5 years' service, plus an additional 10.5 days of public and privilege holidays
  • opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
  • an interest-free season ticket loan
  • an excellent pension scheme
  • a cycle to work scheme
  • facilities such as a gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
  • paid parental and adoption leave

Equal opportunities
At GCHQ, diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a workforce that truly reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: people of different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including individuals from groups that are currently under-represented in our workforce, such as women, people from ethnic minority backgrounds, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Find out more about our culture, working environment and diversity on our website.

We’re Disability Confident
GCHQ is proud to have achieved Leader status within the Department for Work and Pensions’ Disability Confident scheme. The scheme encourages employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. As a Disability Confident organisation, we aim to ensure that a fair and proportionate number of disabled applicants who best meet the essential criteria for this position, assessed at sift, are offered an interview, if it is practical for us to do so. This is known as the Offer of Interview. To secure an interview for this role, the minimum criteria (in order of application process) are:

  1. Meet the eligibility criteria: complete an initial application form, including pre-screening questions, to ensure you meet our eligibility criteria
  2. You’ll be required to reach the minimum pass mark for the online Situational Judgement Test (SJT), which assesses your ability to problem-solve
  3. Demonstrate a strong motivation and commitment to work for the UK Intelligence Agencies, assessed at application form sift
  4. Demonstrate a high level and knowledge of the Russian language and achieve a pass in the language tests

We offer a range of extra support available throughout the recruitment process to enable you to perform at your best. Visit our how to apply page for information on reasonable adjustments we can offer.

What to expect
Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:

  1. An initial online application form including pre-screening questions to ensure you meet our eligibility criteria
  2. Online Situational Judgement Test (SJT) rating the appropriateness of your response to a series of short scenarios. The SJT tests criteria important for all roles in our organisation.
  3. Full online application form
  4. In-person language tests in London
  5. An in-person interview and analysis test in Cheltenham
  6. If successful, you will receive a conditional offer of employment (subject to vetting)

Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 to 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.

Before you apply
To work at GCHQ, you must be a British citizen or hold dual British nationality. Read about our eligibility criteria.

This role requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). It’s something everyone in the UK Intelligence Community undertakes. Find out more about the vetting process.

Please note we have a strict drugs policy, so once you start your application, you can’t take any recreational drugs, and you’ll need to declare your previous drug usage at the relevant stage.

Before applying, we recommend setting up a separate email address for your contact with us to ensure your personal and application correspondence remain separate. Try to avoid including identifying features in your email address, such as your first and/or surname and date of birth. This is good practice and will help you manage your application with us more securely.

The role is based in Cheltenham or Scarborough, so you’ll need to live within a commutable distance. Please consider any financial implications and practicalities before submitting an application, as we do not offer relocation costs.

We offer reasonable reimbursement of travel costs for candidates attending in-person interviews or assessments during the recruitment and vetting process. Full details will be provided with your interview or assessment invitation.

Reimbursement is discretionary and will only be made in line with the Candidate Expenses Policy, as amended from time to time. Candidates must book their own travel, using the most economical option, and provide original hard copy receipts for reimbursement.

Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to begin your application. Applying from outside the UK will affect our ability to progress your application. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member.

Right to Withdraw Statement:
Please be aware that we reserve the right to bring forward the closing date for this role from the original closing date once a certain number of applications have been received. Please be mindful of this and submit your application at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment.
