Job Description

A fantastic opportunity to work for a leading travel company and the UK’s largest tour operator. The Technical Manager – River Cruise will manage the technical operations of the TUI River Cruise vessels in a safe and cost-effective manner so they can deliver the TUI River Cruise products to the required standards and ensure we maintain effective operational delivery.

Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager, the Technical Manager is responsible for ensuring that the fleet is technically managed and operated in the most cost-effective manner and in compliance with all International, Flag State and Port State legal requirements.

ABOUT THE JOB

  • Assist the onboard engineers in reviewing the repair specifications, considering the requirements of Class Society, Owners’ and Company’s standards, PMS reports, deck, tank/hold and machinery condition reports, defect reports, and any national, port state and international legislation.
  • Review all reports of technical non-conformities, incidents or near misses and following-up the implementation and verification of corrective/preventive actions process including evaluation of their effectiveness.
  • Assist the engineers and supplier’s technical director in ensuring that preventive maintenance processes and plans are in place to cover any work to include but not limited to the hull, all onboard machinery, deck, electrical equipment, etc, as described in the PMS and set by the Class ad any country requirements where we are sailing through.
  • To lead the weekly technical calls with suppler to review ongoing performance and progress and closing any actions as result of the above reviews.
  • High level monthly reports and reviews to be initiated with senior team to feedback on overall condition, monthly spend vs agreed repair and maintenance budgets (R&M) and raise escalations for any spend/costs needed outside of planned budget, highlighting the rationale/risks for this.
  • Inspecting vessels, monitoring their condition, and preparing condition/attendance reports, including any comments on maintenance, crew performance, etc.
  • Attending repairs and out of service maintenance periods to ensure that work is being conducted as required and costs are being properly controlled.
  • Ownership of the fleet’s sustainability reporting and documentation, driving of technical and hotel related sustainability goals to ensure delivery of TUI Group Sustainability agenda is in focus and actions are being taken. Identify areas to report, track and improve upon.
  • Provide advice on any possible future investment needed focusing on shore power connections and technically looking at more sustainable ways of operating that might drive any conversations around longer term investments/upgrades etc.
  • Take the lead in project managing any planned winter work and out of service maintenance and repairs or dry dock work needed. To work with supplier on establishing the scope of works timeframes, costs, and priorities to be fed back in time for budget planning and review.
  • Evaluating any repair quotations and suppliers based on the “best quality of works” / “cost” relation, considering the vessels’ itinerary.
  • Assist the Engineers in monitoring all aspects/performance of safety and environmental protection related to the vessels’ technical operation and escalating to the supplier’s technical director and Senior Ops Manger when such performance does not meet with the Company’s standards.
  • Work with onboard hotel management and internal CX/Ops teams to deliver any hotel refurbishment and upgrade products.
  • Assist in the preparation of data to support business cases for technical and sustainability business cases.
  • Auditing any logbooks, handovers, and ensuring weekly/monthly checklists are implemented to ensure standards are being maintained and ensuring that contingency plans and other manuals are updated as and when needed.
  • Auditing that the working conditions onboard are safe.
  • Support the ongoing Service Level Agreement to ensure we have the right way of working, processes and checks in place and agreed with supplier for the operation and ongoing repair and maintenance of our vessels.
  • Keep close links and communication with technical & sustainability teams across Marella/wider cruise network for any high-level escalations/advice and any upcoming changes/projects/initiatives etc that could be scaled down to or adapted for River Cruise operations.
  • During operational periods there may be requirements and times needed to support any high-level technical escalations that happen outside of normal working hours.

ABOUT YOU

  • Marine Engineering qualifications, or suitable mechanical engineering experience necessary.
  • Sea going/river experience and, ideally, shore-based experience of vessel management or support.
  • Experience in vessel asset management and/or dry docking and major refits would be preferable.
  • Being able to remotely trouble shoot and support onboard engineers with any technical issues arising that they cannot solve directly onboard.
  • Team player with proven people and project management skills; ability to influence multi-disciplinary teams constructively where they do not have line management authority.
  • Track record in meeting tight deadlines in a pressurised environment.
  • Analytical, logical, and methodical
  • Clear & articulate communicator with good negotiation, influencing and presentation skills
  • Proactive, dynamic self-starter who can work independently and build effective relationships both within a team and with other organisations.
  • Able to manage and work with colleagues across cultures/nationalities and adapt style to get actions implemented (sometimes within high pressurised time frames and environments)
