Summary:

At SAP, we integrate AI technology with extensive industry-specific data and deep process knowledge to create innovative AI capabilities for all SAP applications. SAP Business AI is responsible for central AI technologies and cloud services such as Joule, Generative AI Hub, AI Core, and other foundational AI capabilities powering AI across the SAP portfolio. Within this landscape, our team focuses on building scalable data platform services enabling AI use cases through trusted, governed, and high-quality business data. Our platform powers large-scale data ingestion, orchestration, processing, cataloguing, and exploration capabilities used across SAP Business AI scenarios. We are looking for an Expert Software Engineer with strong hands-on engineering expertise and technical leadership capabilities. This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who thrives in complex cloud-native environments, drives technical direction, mentors developers through hands-on collaboration, and takes ownership of mission-critical platform capabilities. This is a highly hands-on technical leadership role.

What You'll Do:

As part of our engineering team, you will design and develop scalable cloud-native applications and platform services on top of SAP Business Technology Platform and modern AI/data technologies.

Your main focus areas will include:

• Backend services and APIs
• Data ingestion and orchestration pipelines
• Data persistency and processing services
• Platform scalability and operational excellence
• Cloud-native application development
• AI and data platform integration scenarios

You will collaborate closely with architects, product managers, and distributed engineering teams across SAP Business AI to shape the next generation of AI-powered enterprise services.

The Role:

As an Expert Software Engineer, you will:

• Lead the technical implementation of scalable cloud-native platform services
• Drive architecture and engineering decisions across backend services, APIs, and data processing pipelines
• Take end-to-end ownership of complex technical topics from design to productive operations
• Build highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable software solutions
• Improve platform reliability, observability, performance, and operational maturity
• Mentor and guide developers through hands-on technical leadership and engineering excellence
• Drive engineering best practices, CI/CD standards, automation, and quality improvements
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams within SAP Business AI
• Contribute to AI-enabled engineering workflows and modern development practices

What You Bring:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business Informatics, or a related technical field
• Strong hands-on experience in backend and cloud application development
• Excellent expertise in JavaScript / TypeScript and Node.js
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native architectures
• Experience designing and building scalable APIs and backend services
• Solid understanding of common architectural patterns such as REST and event-driven architectures
• Strong ownership mindset with the ability to independently drive technical topics
• Passion for clean architecture, engineering excellence, scalability, and maintainability
• Curiosity and practical interest in AI technologies, LLM ecosystems, and AI-powered development workflows

Nice to have

• Experience with SAP BTP and CAP (Cloud Application Programming Model)
• Experience with React, SAP UI5, Angular, or modern frontend technologies
• Experience with DevOps methodologies and CI/CD tooling (e.g. GitHub, Jenkins)
• Experience with observability, monitoring, and cloud operations
• Experience working in Agile environments (e.g. SAFe)
