Senior Platform Engineer - SAP Big Data Fabric Services
Job Description
We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
What do you think about joining an innovative, engaged, and collaborative development environment, building a cutting-edge platform for big data with a team of experts worldwide? The Big Data Fabric Services (BDFS) enables SAP Lines of Business and customers to easily enter the world of Big Data and enable customers to integrate SAP data with external partner data engineering tools and non-SAP data.
We are looking for a Developer / Platform Engineer with strong backend development skills and working knowledge of cloud-native application development.
The role is suitable for an experienced engineer who can contribute independently to development, troubleshooting, quality, and delivery of platform services.
This is not a data scientist role. The team builds and operates platform services that enable scalable, secure, and reliable data storage and access.
THE PRODUCT
The major goal of BDFS is to enable SAP Lines of Business (LoB’s) and customers to enter the world of big data easily. To achieve that objective, we’re delivering Apache Spark as a service, a multi-language engine for executing data engineering, data science, and machine learning on single-node machines or clusters (Kubernetes in our case). We’re enabling data to be consumed from multiple hyperscaler agnostic data sources using the Delta Sharing communication protocol on top of the HANA Data Lake File Service (HDLFS), an SAP-managed cloud object storage that allows storage and consumption of data without multiple layers of ETL (Extract Transform and Load) systems and intermediary data storages (Lakehouse architecture).
WHAT YOU’LL DO
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for architecture, design, coding, testing, troubleshooting, and quality assurance activities in a development team.
In your day-to-day work, your tasks will include:
- Drive architecture and technical design discussions.
- Design scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable cloud-native backend services.
- Own complex technical topics from analysis and design to implementation and delivery.
- Contribute to platform architecture decisions around service lifecycle, provisioning, credentials, configuration, resiliency, observability, and operational readiness.
- Develop backend services and platform components using Java and related technologies.
- Work on distributed applications and services running in cloud/container environments.
- Evaluate technical options, identify trade-offs, and recommend practical architecture solutions.
- Contribute to secure-by-design architecture and platform engineering practices.
- Ensure platform services follow security, reliability, scalability, and operational best practices.
- Contribute to architecture discussions around authentication, authorization, secrets management, encryption, and secure multi-tenant design.
- Support observability, monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational readiness practices for platform services.
- Build PoCs and validate technical approaches for complex platform topics.
- Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production and development issues.
- Review code, design documents, and implementation approaches to ensure high engineering quality.
- Mentor and guide junior developers and help improve technical maturity within the team.
- Support Product team and Architects in technical discussions and planning.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders across locations.
- Work in an agile team that uses the Scrum framework to self-organize and work towards development goals.
- Contribute to engineering practices around clean code, CI/CD, testing, automation, security, observability, and operational excellence.
