ABAP Expert - SAP Data Accelerator (m/f/d)
Job Description
We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:
Join an innovative, collaborative development environment and help shape secure data access and connectivity capabilities as part of SAP’s Big Data Fabric Services (BDFS). We are looking for ABAP Expert to help shape the next generation of SAP Data Accelerator and related BDFS platform capabilities across architecture, engineering execution, and production readiness. We do not work as data scientists analyzing or extracting data directly. We build the platform capabilities that make this possible.
THE PRODUCT
SAP Data Accelerator focuses on secure partner connectivity and access to SAP business data across SAP ERP and LoB applications in on-premise, private cloud, and public cloud landscapes. This work sits within the broader BDFS portfolio, which enables SAP Lines of Business and customers to enter the world of big data more easily. BDFS delivers platform capabilities such as Apache Spark as a service, multi-language data processing on Kubernetes-based infrastructure, and access to hyperscaler-agnostic data sources using the Delta Sharing protocol on top of the HANA Data Lake File Service (HDLFS) As the product evolves through future phases, the scope expands from secure connectivity into broader API-driven and platform-managed data access capabilities.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
As an ABAP Expert, you will contribute across design, coding, testing, operability, and quality assurance in a development team, while also helping shape architecture and technical direction
You will assess and solve issues in new or existing code and work with high attention to detail, reliability, and efficiency. You will collaborate closely with your team members and stakeholders to ensure success
In your day-to-day, your tasks will be:
- Work on design, coding, and quality assurance tasks related to strategic product capabilities
- Drive platform decisions that balance security, scalability, operability, and product evolution across current and future phases
- Development activities in ABAP and Java.
- Work in an agile team that uses the Scrum framework to self-organize and work towards development goals.
- Mentor and guide the team to foster professional development and engineering excellence
- Support the team on technical discussions, architecture topics, and platform direction
- Help build PoCs, evaluate technical options, and drive important engineering decisions
WHAT YOU BRING:
Required skills
Core engineering and technical leadership
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the following areas: Computer Science, Systems Analysis, Information Technology, Engineering.
Advanced or fluent English. - Excellent programming skills and knowledge of algorithms, data structures, space, and run-time complexity (Big-O notation).
- Strong hands-on ABAP development expertise, including ABAP OO, ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), and modern ABAP development practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex backend issues spanning ABAP code, NetWeaver infrastructure, and data extraction pipelines.
- Good communication skills
ABAP lifecycle and engineering excellence
- Deep understanding of the full ABAP development lifecycle: design, implementation, unit and integration testing, transport management, and production deployment.
- Proficiency with the Change and Transport System (CTS/TMS).
- Experience building and maintaining SAP add-ons, enhancement packages, or backend extensions using ABAP plugin or add-on frameworks.
- Experience with ABAP performance analysis, runtime analysis (SAT/ST05), and optimization of data-intensive programs and reports.
SAP connector and data extraction development
- Knowledge in building connectors and extraction components for SAP ERP systems, covering both ECC and S/4HANA landscapes.
- Deep experience with SAP integration and extraction interfaces: RFC/BAPI, IDoc processing, OData services (SEGW and RAP), and SAP standard extraction frameworks (LO Cockpit, DataSources, BW extractors).
- Solid understanding of the SAP NetWeaver stack — including the Application Server ABAP (AS ABAP), ICF, and the NetWeaver Communication Layer — and how it underpins secure, scalable data access from external platforms.
- Experience designing and implementing partner connectivity patterns from SAP backends to external data platforms, including secure credential handling, session management, and multi-tenant considerations.
Nice to have
- Experience with Java, Python, or Go for building integration layers or connector orchestration logic outside the SAP stack.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native or Kubernetes-based environments where extracted SAP data is consumed downstream.
LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
By joining our team, you will help shape platform capabilities that evolve from current connectivity scenarios toward broader API-driven and storage-backed data access scenarios.
You will work on high-impact engineering topics spanning platform architecture, security, scale, observability, and operational excellence.
You will collaborate with strong engineers across BDFS and adjacent SAP platform areas.
You will influence how secure enterprise data access capabilities are built for hybrid SAP landscapes over the next project phases.
MEET YOUR TEAM:
You will work with your team on SAP Data Accelerator within SAP HANA Cloud & Datalakehouse / Big Data Fabric Services. These products help our customers access data from anywhere.
