Where you’ll work:

All our roles are hub based (Bristol, Glasgow or London), providing a dedicated space for collaboration, connection and teamwork. You’ll also have the flexibility to work from home.

Everyone belongs at OVO

At OVO, we are on a mission to solve one of humanity's biggest challenges, the climate crisis. And we know it takes all of us to change the world. That's why we need diverse people from all abilities, gender identities, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, life experiences and backgrounds to join us.

Teamworking for the planet

Everything we do here spins around Plan Zero. So, naturally, the team you’ll be joining plays a gigantic role in making that happen. Here’s how:

The Data Scientist is a key, independent contributor who will design, build and deploy foundational models to solve crucial business challenges. You'll dive deep into our data to uncover insights, driving tangible feature improvements and optimisation across our products. This role requires a strong focus on the entire data science lifecycle: from model building and rigorous evaluation to in-depth analysis of product metrics and A/B testing. Working collaboratively within the team, you will run experiments and deliver actionable results that directly inform and accelerate our product development, helping us achieve our Plan Zero mission.

This role in a nutshell:

You'll own the lifecycle of foundational models, starting with development and implementation to effectively address key business challenges. This involves conducting comprehensive data analysis to uncover critical insights and hidden patterns. Crucially, you will translate these findings into accurate and actionable results that you'll deliver directly to stakeholders, using effective data visualisations to communicate your story. Finally, you'll ensure the longevity and reliability of our data products through continuous performance tracking and model evaluation.

This role will involve working with multidisciplinary teams involved in the creation of AI-driven products, so an understanding of the concepts involved in bringing AI-based solutions to market would be useful.

Your key outcomes will be:

  • Develop and implement machine learning models (such as regression, classification or clustering) using the most appropriate algorithms and techniques to solve complex business problems.
  • Continuously improve model effectiveness through rigorous feature engineering, selection and performance evaluation using relevant statistical metrics.
  • Conduct deep exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover critical relationships, distributions and anomalies within our data.
  • Create compelling and intuitive visualisations (using tools like Matplotlib, Seaborn, or Tableau) to effectively communicate complex data insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Execute and analyse A/B tests to rigorously evaluate the real-world impact of product changes and feature deployments.
  • Provide data-backed recommendations derived from your A/B test results to optimise product performance and inform strategic decisions.
  • Prepare and present clear, concise reports that summarise analysis findings and model performance, ensuring stakeholders understand the key takeaways and actionable next steps.
  • Document all data analysis processes and model development steps thoroughly to ensure knowledge sharing and reproducibility.
  • Analyse product usage data to identify emerging trends and patterns, tracking and reporting on key product metrics to precisely measure feature impact.
  • Leverage your analysis to provide data-driven insights and recommendations that shape the product roadmap and development pipeline.
  • Clean, transform and prepare diverse datasets for accurate analysis and robust modeling.
  • Utilise SQL fluently to query and manipulate data from relational databases, ensuring the highest standards of data quality and consistency across all projects.

You’ll be successful in this role if you…

  • Have experience in data analysis, advanced modeling, machine learning and exposure to, or a keen interest in generative AI.
  • Bring proven experience in a data science or related role, with a strong track record of developing and implementing models that deliver real impact.
  • Are proficient with data visualisation and reporting tools to effectively communicate insights.
  • Are experienced in working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in core machine learning techniques and concepts.
  • Have strong data wrangling skills, including expert data cleaning and preprocessing.
  • Are skilled in using data visualisation tools and techniques to present complex findings clearly and compellingly.
  • Have intermediate to advanced expertise in SQL for efficient database querying and manipulation.
  • Show solid programming skills in Python or R.
  • Are adept at evaluating model performance using appropriate metrics and making necessary iterative adjustments.
  • Are a strong analytical and creative problem-solver, capable of tackling complex challenges.
  • Have effective communication skills, both written and verbal, allowing you to clearly articulate technical findings to diverse audiences.
  • Can collaborate seamlessly within a team and with cross-functional partners across the business.
  • Are detail oriented, maintaining a focus on delivering high quality, accurate results that drive our Plan Zero mission.
