Job Description

At Northern we keep people moving with confidence and behind the scenes, our data engineers create the same confidence in the information and insights which keep Northern’s services running safely, smoothly and efficiently.

As the Agile Team Manager for Data Engineering, you will be accountable for building and leading a high performing team of skilled data engineers, managing cross-functional projects, and aligning the data engineering strategy with business objectives. This role is pivotal in ensuring the availability, security, and scalability of data systems to support the organisation's digital transformation – it’s about shaping how data powers Northern’s future.

What you’ll be doing

  • Leading a team of data engineers – fostering collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Leading the team in an agile way of working, running sprint stand ups, sprint planning, retrospectives and refinement sessions. Including members of other teams in sprints where needed (e.g. analysts, developers, IT architects)
  • Overseeing project delivery from start to finish – managing timelines and quality standards
  • Working closely with our Lead Data Platform Engineer and Data Analytics Manager to define and deliver data solutions that make a real difference.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders across IT, analytics, and business units to identify data needs and deliver solutions that maximise value.
  • Translating complex business needs into sprint stories with clear prioritisation.
  • Acting as the key contact for senior stakeholders, ensuring data projects align with Northern’s wider digital transformation goals.

About you

You’ll bring a blend of people leadership, strategic thinking and delivery know-how. You don’t need to be the most technical person in the room, but you do know how to get the best out of those who are.

  • Experience leading technical teams – ideally in data engineering, software development or analytics.
  • Experience of agile ways of working, sprints etc (knowledge of Azure DevOps is a plus).
  • A track record of managing complex projects with clear, confident communication.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills – able to turn business challenges into technical solutions.
  • A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • High-level organisation, strategic thinking and the ability to balance priorities – those are three things you’ll bring that make a real difference.

What’s in it for you?

At Northern, we don’t just value our people - we go the extra mile to support them. Here’s a taste of what you can look forward to:

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
