Senior Actuary – General Insurance
Job Description
Senior Actuary – General Insurance
- Influence significant General Insurance decisions through independent oversight, constructive challenge and enterprise-wide exposure
- Broaden your experience across reserving, pricing, underwriting and reinsurance, with a strong platform for future actuarial or Risk leadership
- Hybrid 80% homeworking and 20% from Stratford Upon Avon
About the role
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced General Insurance Actuary to join NFU Mutual's Actuarial Function within the Risk division. Supporting the GI Chief Actuary, you'll provide independent oversight and challenge across reserving, pricing, underwriting and reinsurance, helping to ensure important actuarial decisions are robust, well-reasoned and support the long-term success of the business.
Working as part of a small and highly visible team, you'll lead independent reviews of actuarial work across the business, assessing methodologies, assumptions and outcomes, identifying opportunities for improvement and providing expert insight to senior stakeholders. You'll produce clear reports, present findings to senior stakeholders and support Executive and Board-level decision making through constructive challenge and independent actuarial opinion.
Unlike many actuarial roles that focus on a single specialism, this position offers broad exposure across multiple disciplines and stakeholder groups. You'll work closely with teams across Underwriting, Pricing, Claims, Finance and Risk, bringing fresh perspectives, supporting continuous improvement and helping to shape the future direction of actuarial oversight at NFU Mutual.
With exposure to both personal and commercial insurance, a large actuarial community and a wide range of career opportunities across the business, this role offers an excellent platform for someone looking to broaden their experience
About you
You’ll be a fully qualified Actuary with significant General Insurance experience and the technical credibility to independently review, question and challenge complex actuarial work. Ideally, you’ll have experience across at least two of reserving, pricing and capital modelling.
You’ll combine analytical and technical expertise with sound commercial judgement, strategic thinking and the confidence to form an independent opinion. Proactive and curious in your approach, you’ll be comfortable investigating complex issues, identifying areas for improvement and translating your findings into practical, value-adding recommendations.
You’ll also be able to demonstrate:
- Fully qualified Actuary with strong General Insurance experience, ideally across reserving, pricing and/or capital modelling
- Strong understanding of actuarial techniques, regulatory requirements and industry best practice
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to challenge assumptions and provide independent judgement
- Strong report-writing, presentation and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics to technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven stakeholder management and influencing skills, with confidence engaging senior stakeholders and governance committees
- Strategic, proactive and commercially minded, with experience coaching or developing less experienced colleagues
