Job Description

Overview

Deep learning is beginning to have a transformative impact on the natural sciences. Within Microsoft Research AI for Science, we explore how advanced AI and deep learning techniques can help address fundamental challenges in the molecular sciences.

As a Research Engineering Intern, you will work alongside researchers and engineers on projects focused on applying machine learning and language modelling techniques within scientific domains. You will contribute to research and engineering efforts that support the development, experimentation, and evaluation of novel AI approaches for the natural sciences, gaining hands‑on experience in a collaborative research environment.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of machine learning and scientific research solutions involving large‑scale, heterogeneous data.
  • Support the development and optimization of distributed data processing and model‑building pipelines.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining tools and technologies used to build, train, optimize, and scale machine learning solutions.
  • Investigate and evaluate large language model capabilities in scientific contexts, including the analysis of reasoning traces and interpretability of model outputs.
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers to help design and run experiments, contributing to the research lifecycle from prototyping through evaluation and, where appropriate, publication.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Linux and the open-source ecosystem
  • Experience with scientific computing

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud computing or HPC is a plus.
  • Experience with language modelling is a plus.
