Job Description

We are looking for a Principal Science Manager to help shape the future of Microsoft 365 Copilot. This role sits within the Microsoft Search, Assistant, and Intelligence (MSAI) organization, which powers the intelligence behind M365 Copilot by combining cutting-edge advances in generative AI with personalized search and recommendation systems. As a Principal Science Manager in MSAI, you will work in an exciting and fast-paced, collaborative environment.

You are a hands on and creative science manager who will bring demonstrable expertise in leveraging large language models via prompt engineering and post-training to build user facing experiences that move top line business metrics like growth, engagement and retention.

You are a hands-on technical science manager who will partner closely with engineering, design and product teams to innovate, design and evaluate end-to-end AI solutions that serve millions of enterprise users. This is a high-impact role where you will influence technical strategy, shape product direction, and collaborate across Microsoft to deliver AI-powered experiences that help users accomplish more with less effort.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire, lead and manage an innovative applied science team working on personalized search and recommendation problems for the M365 CoPilot Search and Chat applications
  • Obsess over moving top line metrics like engagement and retention by improving the quality of existing user facing experiences as well as by quickly prototyping and bringing to production new user experiences that leverage state of the art models.
  • Lead your team in training both traditional ML models as well as models leveraging modern paradigms like post-training of Large Language Models. You will help them design and run experiments, define and validate metrics, and run opportunity analyses. Additionally you will partner with product managers and designers to bring innovation at the experience level.
  • Support hiring, coaching, mentoring and career development of Applied Scientists and Software Engineers to build inclusive and ambitious applied science focused teams.
  • Support and develop a thriving applied science culture within the MSAI organization that encourages experimentation, scientific process, and innovation.
  • Communicate internally and externally through publication, presentations, and other mediums (e.g., blogs, press interviews) on research progress, major breakthroughs, and product innovation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND years of related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Proficient years of people management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Statistics, or related areas.
  • Proficiency managing research or engineering teams in Machine Learning, Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Recommendation Systems or related fields.
  • Professional experience developing ML models for scaled production services, with a proven track record of successfully shipping applied research to production
  • Solid people leadership skills to influence others, with the ability to understand team dynamics, retain, attract, and develop team members. Grounded in growth mindset, and advocate for diversity and inclusion.
