Job Description

Overview

The Azure WAN Networking Team is expanding, and we are actively seeking creative, talented, dedicated and responsible individuals who possess a deep passion for network operations. Our mission is to develop and manage the most exceptional Wide Area Network (WAN) infrastructure globally. We are deeply committed to achieving excellence in network operations, and we are seeking engineers who share our passion and can approach challenges from a customer-centric standpoint.

Focusing on the global backbone network and working closely with partner teams both internally and externally, you’ll be a critical part of operating this network. From guiding technicians to safely replace failed hardware components on our routers, to helping customers troubleshoot performance issues across our network and the Internet, you will have the opportunity to learn and develop advanced skills. This is a high visibility position in an area of large and expanding investment for Microsoft Azure and offers a terrific opportunity for technical and career growth.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Triage and Resolution: Act as the first point of contact for identifying, triaging, and resolving low to medium-risk severity incidents within defined service level agreements (SLAs). Utilize troubleshooting techniques and established procedures to quickly diagnose and address issues, ensuring minimal impact on operations. You will also be involved in triage difficult routing issues and responsible for restoring networking services quickly.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: Collaborate with Tier-2 support teams to escalate and resolve issues as needed. Work with external partners such as ISPs or our customers for maintenance needs and troubleshooting activities.
  • Maintenance Coordination: Coordinate with on-site technicians to execute fiber maintenance activities safely and efficiently. Follow standard SOPs/MOPs during maintenances to minimize downtime and ensure the integrity of the network infrastructure.
  • Hardware Replacement: Assist in the replacement of network hardware, including routers, line cards and other components. Follow established procedures and protocols to safely and accurately replace hardware, minimizing disruptions to network services.
  • Monitoring: Active engagement in continual monitoring of network systems to swiftly detect and effectively resolve any alerts or anomalies arising, ensuring uninterrupted network functionality and operational efficiency.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation of incidents, resolutions, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts, protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF/ISIS), and technologies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting network issues and utilizing network monitoring tools.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a Tier-1 support role, preferably in a network operations center (NOC) environment.
  • Experience with routing (e.g. BGP, IS-IS) and traffic engineering solutions (e.g. RSVP-TE, Segment Routing) in backbone networks.
  • Experience working with on-site technicians and coordinating maintenance activities.
  • CCNP/JNCIP certifications.
  • Knowledge in python or any other software language.
