Job Description

What you'll bring to the team

The Beluga Whale Sanctuary is the world’s first open-water sanctuary created to provide a safe, natural home for beluga whales retired from captivity. From these pioneering beginnings, the Sanctuary has grown into a globally recognised conservation and animal welfare initiative.

We are a small, passionate team driven by collaboration, flexibility, and a shared commitment to protecting these incredible animals. Working here means making a real difference every day.

The Role

This is a hands-on, varied, and creative role that brings the Beluga Whale Sanctuary’s story to life. As Marketing & Fundraising Coordinator, you will inspire people to visit, support, and connect with our mission—helping to grow awareness, engagement, and vital income for the Sanctuary.

No two days are the same. You might be welcoming visitors and answering enquiries one day, and creating digital content, coordinating campaigns, or building partnerships the next.

You’ll play a key role in increasing visitor numbers, strengthening supporter relationships, and delivering engaging marketing and fundraising activity across multiple channels.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing & Communications

  • Create and deliver engaging, year-round marketing campaigns to support visitor growth and revenue

  • Manage and update the Sanctuary website to ensure content is accurate, inspiring, and up to date

  • Produce content across social media, blogs, email newsletters, and supporter communications

  • Film, edit, and produce short-form video content for marketing, PR, partners, and fundraising

  • Coordinate printed marketing materials in line with brand guidelines

  • Work closely with local suppliers, partners, tour operators, cruise lines, and central PR teams

  • Monitor guest feedback and online reviews, sharing insights to improve the visitor experience

Fundraising

  • Support fundraising initiatives including animal adoptions, digital campaigns, and onsite donations

  • Manage supporter and donor data using CRM systems

  • Create compelling fundraising content aligned with the wider marketing strategy

  • Track fundraising performance and identify opportunities for growth

  • Research and apply for relevant grants

  • Build relationships with local businesses for financial or in-kind support

Collaboration & Ownership

  • Act as a friendly first point of contact for guest enquiries and bookings

  • Lead day-to-day marketing operations with a high degree of autonomy

  • Contribute ideas for budget planning, income growth, and engagement

  • Adapt communications quickly in response to operational needs or animal welfare priorities

Qualifications & Experience

You’ll be a creative, organised, and enthusiastic communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about conservation.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience in marketing, fundraising, or communications

  • Confidence creating digital content, including video

  • Experience using CRM systems

  • Strong social media and content coordination skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English required; Icelandic desirable)

  • Strong organisational and relationship-building skills

  • A flexible, hands-on approach and genuine passion for marine conservation

Benefits

  • Be part of a world-leading conservation initiative

  • Work in a unique, inspiring environment in Iceland

  • Have real ownership and impact in a small, collaborative team

  • Help tell powerful stories that support animal welfare and conservation
