APM Terminals

The Interface and Integration Expert is part of the team responsible for the design, execution and validation of terminal automation. He/she will be responsible for automation design, system integration, and continuous improvement per the Terminal operational requirements.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Overall responsibilities are the following:

  • Contribute to Automation implementation/validation in line with the Technical / Technology Integration Framework and Functional Requirements. Ensure proper definition of technical interface specifications for Equipment, civil, IT Systems.
  • Oversee the implementation, validation, and commissioning of terminal automation systems, ensuring adherence to technical standards and operational requirements.
  • Manage vendors during design, testing, installation activities, and required post-handover modifications
  • Manage the testing, troubleshooting, and validation process of modernized systems to verify performance as well as safety and third-party integration
  • Configure, test, and maintain modernized systems including: PLC’s, SCADA, HMI’s
  • Define new requirements with terminal stakeholders and implement changes to increase productivity, efficiency, quality, and safety
  • Ensure proper integration of vendor engineering solutions into the overall terminal engineering documentation.
  • Ensure that modernized systems and related documentation comply with contractual requirements and local standards/regulations (especially safety-related functions)
  • Actively participate in technical activities under the coordination of respective departments (IT, Equipment and Installations, and Civil)
  • Actively ensure safety standards and policies are incorporated in program efforts and assume a visible leadership role on the construction site by monitoring compliance by all contractors and suppliers

CRITICAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

Necessary to perform the requirements of the position:

  • Education – University or higher vocational degree and certification in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related discipline is preferred. Post-graduate study in Control Engineering is also preferred.
  • Experience - Minimum five (5) years in Industrial System Design, System Integration, or Automation Engineering roles.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related project handling/coordination experience and process documentation (for example, functional requirements, control design, instrumentation design, etc.) strongly recommended.
  • Collaboration – Proven ability to build strong, effective working relationships with stakeholders across disciplines and organizational levels. Demonstrates empathy, cultural awareness, and well-developed communication skills to support cross-functional teamwork and alignment.
  • Functional Excellence – Strong leadership and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to drive results through influence and collaboration. Delivers high-quality work under pressure by applying analytical thinking, structured organization, and disciplined time management. Committed to continuous improvement and delivering excellent internal client support.

Skills – the following are strongly recommended/critical:

  • PLC: Siemens, TIA Portal, ladder logic, ST, FBD, IL, AT commands.
  • CMS/HMI: SCADA, WinCC
  • Drives: Siemens
  • Platforms, Networking and protocol (OPC UA, TCP/IP, Profibus, ASI, CAN-Bus, Profinet)
  • Scripting/Programming: Python, C#, SQL
  • Business Intelligence: Power BI
  • Hardware and Instrumentation design
  • Commissioning experience

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.

General office setting, typically the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work, usually at a computer terminal – with short breaks or lunch period. However, there may be some bending/stooping, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer. May need to travel across the US and occasionally overseas.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will have to withstand exposure to outdoor/adverse working conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally noisy.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

  • Reports directly to Interface and Integration Director
  • This position has no direct reports, however multiple contractors and 3rd party vendors to monitor and supervise
  • This position works with both internal and external stakeholders
  • This is a domestic position based in Los Angeles, CA, USA

Salary: $140,000 - $160,000
